Check the oil level in the gearbox. It may be low. If its not that, try letting the car idle at 1,500 rpm for a minute or two before engaging reverse, it may need time to build up oil pressure to engage reverse. Mine has this problem, won't engage 4th until the car has done 1 or 2 Km.

I've heard but have no authority that this is the clutch packs starting to go.. with my car I pop it into reverse and let it sit for about 10-20 seconds then it's OK.. pretty sure its the pressure needs to build up.

240,000 km on my V6 second gen, the clutch that engages fourth gear is very weak. Need to get it up to 60 KPH in third before activating it, otherwise it just free revs, but only when cold. Once warmed up it is good. I blame a tired clutch pack plus slow oil pressure buildup from startup for that. Reverse is fine at any time. I can live with it lol

Once you know how to get around an automatic's little age related problems its no big deal really.
