hey all,
so a mate of mine ( 95ts aka matt ) just hooked me up with a 1998 TF magna that he was going to buy but decided not to due to circumstances and told me to sign up here if i needed help.
im just wondering, matt said it had not been serviced for awhile by the looks of it and said that is something i should look at doing straight away
so what oil should i use, is nulon premix coolant ok? matt said to get ngk iridium plugs and 8mm topgunner leads are these good? also is it ok to just degrease the engine matt said he would come over and show me what to cover but i just want to make sure in case he cant make it over
is there anything else i should be thinking about doing? sorry all i am kinda new to the concept of working on cars but i do have a manual here he said to read over.

Start off with a simple oil and filter change if its dirty. A cheap 20-W50 oil and any filter will do, look at the model number on the filter or ask at the parts counter for the right filter. If the coolant looks ok (bright green or red colour) there's no hurry with that. Check the air filter if you can work out how to get to it, if its dirty replace it. Check gearbox and power steering reservoir levels. Research on this forum which oils to use. Before you replace anything else, like plugs and leads, get to know the car first, take your time and knock up a few hundred kms first. It will show you where the problems, if any, are. Pump up the tyres (32 psi all round is ok on stock wheels) and check for wheel wobble, steering feel, gearbox shifts etc.
Might be worth your while to stick your head under the car and check for oil leaks. While you are there look at the driveshaft boots - 2 on each shaft - and the bellows on the steering rack. These often split and will need replacing if leaking grease. Cheaper if you catch that early rather than wait for the drive shafts to wear out.
Check all the lights and aircon too.
Welcome.
To be honest I wouldn't use coolant for engine oil - it will last about 5 minutes before blowing up. Look for Penrite HPR oils, the stuff works well in the V6 magna engines. If its got a few K's they do an 'extra 10' in oil viscosity for better protection when oil is up to temp. Obviously go and get yourself a genuine oil filter from Mitsubishi, they are quite reasonably priced. NGK plugs are fine and those leads should be fine as well.
In terms of a degrease, does it need it? Is it dropping oil?
Other stuff, definately gearbox fluid if its got high k's. I am assuming its auto?

WOW quick reply's thanks guys.
i didnt mean to use coolant as oil dave haha i meant oil and coolant types coolant going in the radiator, with degreasing it does have a little oil over it but the mechanic that i bought it from said it was from the rocker cover gasket leaking and that they had fixed that , also has dust everywhere i guess from sitting for so long. matt said to use genuine filters also so that is what i will do. yeah automatic with 290906 on the speedo. what number oil should i be using. is see madmax said to use 20/50 but matt said that 15/40 should be fine so im not sure what one to go for.

oh when i bought it, the mechanic said the battery in it actualyl didnt come with the car so i had to drop the battery back down to them when i got a chance, any suggestions on a decent battery not to over the top but a little better than normal, the mitsubishi dealer here i saw uses a delco brand, are they good?
welcome little matt :D
nulon coolant is fine, oil i said 15/40 but given the higher ks you could go a 20/50 i know penrite has a 25/60 not sure if thats gonna be to thick tho, battery like i said just buy a supercharge one for 90.00 from autobarn to get you going and when u install all ur audio gear see if you need to upgrade or wait for the next group buy of optima yellow tops, degreasing i told ya i would come up and help cuase knowing you you would end up hosing the crap outta your electrics, i should be back in a week or so ill let ya know it can wait till then anyways, just remember to go down to mits and get the plenum gasket so we can change your real plugs over, and did u ask the mechs about the timing belt being done or not? pretty sure they said it had been done
