Hi all,
What is involved in programming a brand spanking new Key for a BEM equipped 3rd Gen?
I know the key has a transponder, and I know that it is possible to have aftermarket keys work with the ECU as I have had one in a previous 3rd Gen. However, as I have not ordered or coded a key myself, what happens, How much will it cost to recode a key, and is it only Mitsu dealers who can do it or can others do so too?
The reason for my question is I have never liked the remote controls for the 3rd gen.
They are rubbish frankly.
So I have found a mob that make a blank drone flip key/remote and I want to code it to my car.
The remote of the flip key can be coded easy enough, The key is the issue.

Generally the aftermarket keys are programmed as a clone to an existing key, most likely you can not programme the key to the car itself unless it has a compatable code already in the key for the car
Most aftermarket keys are blanks in so far as cut and code, the locksmith will grab your existing key, grab the code, copy to the new key, cut it and charge you generally more than a new genuine key which is pre cut and the dealer then programmes into the BEM of your car
Unless you can find a workshop with a MUTTII you will need to get a dealer to code the key if it is pre coded
Make sure you bring all your keys with you as well as once programme is started, any keys not present will no longer work

That begs the question.
Wonder if it is possible to use a blank 380 key and have it reprogrammed to a 3rd Gen????
Be nice to do away with the peanut and have an all in one key/remote.
Your best bet is to get a genuine key from a dealer and let them code it for you. They recode the car and any existing key you have.
This way if somebody has one of the original keys they cannot use it to start your car.
I have had this done.
What do the dealers charge roughly?

My last one cost me $135 all up. While ago though, like 2 years ago. Bought the key from the dealer, had it cut elsewhere, then back to the dealer to do his MUTT magic.
The key was $70.00 or $90.00, coding was $40.00. That was November last year.
They did it while I waited.

Not sure why you would buy a key blank, get it cut and go back to code when you just give your vin number and the key comes pre cut from the dealer
Really depends on what key the OP got as to if it can be coded, I would be keen to try if I had one lol
Also with the 380 key, if someone is willing to get a newbie, get it cut I will try and programme it for nothing as I do have MUTTII, may work, may not

380 keys are different they have a blade like normal keys whereas 3rd gen keys have a channel cut in them

Neither did I. Not even when I worked at the factory. Just put the key in the ignition to drive them around the plant.

No this is an American company. As much as I like to think 'New Europe' suppliers are a bargain, I can't get around the idea that the advertising signs are flashy, the product rubbish, and delivered to market on a mule towed cart.
Moving on; Thanks for the info about key programming.
I will investigate further about the key's ability to accept encrypted security.
This may be more trouble than its worth for a key. But we will see.
