View Full Version : Rough Idle and Cut Wood Smell

Just changed all 6 spark plugs on my TF, and when I went to start the car it won't idle properly and jumps up and down between 0 and 1k so I took it for a drive to see if that would iron it out, and when I got back I lifted the bonnet and found that there was a strong smell of fresh cut wood (like the smell when you use a power saw to cut through a bit of timber) in the engine bay

Anyone experienced this before and can shed some light?

Just turned the car on again, and there was a very loud, high pitched squeal/whistle for about 10 seconds. Anyone got any ideas?

Belts need tightening?

No spanners dropped into belts?
Check belts, and as soon as you can. ....... Has an idler pulley seized-up? Look for wear/glazing on the external drive belts - must be something to do with them, surely?

Could air-con compressor or alternator have dropped a bearing, etc (had a TN sieze its air-con between Melb and Shepparton on a long trip at Xmas-New Yr once - no air-con in 40 degrees for 2 wks until New Year).

That's about all I got.....

Don't think it's the belts, as I didn't touch them at all today, just changed the spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil, and fuel filter and raditor flush. I took the throttle body off and put it back on and the whistle/squeal is gone, just the rough idle remains and spluttering from the muffler
