View Full Version : rear door window help
ok. first admins please xcuse any language,
so after a week away to get over some personal issues i return to work today to find some prick has gone whle im actually earning my dollars and smashed my rear drivers side window and to make matters worse has stolen my phone, wallet and gps. i work as a chef so i normally dont take my wallet or phone in with me and i park out the rear of work so normally pretty safe.
just wondering if anyone could tell me how hard it is to remove the smashed glass in the rear drivers side window ( the bigger glass) and how much i might be looking at for a replacment one..
will post pics tomorrow just very tired after a long day and very annoyed at the moment.
also i have a alarm fitted to the car which didnt go of, anyone know any reason why a professionally fitted alarm ( aftermarket alarm fitted by mitsubishi lismore) might not go off even with a window smashed and some gutless idiot stealing my hard earned items.
guess im glad they didnt steal my audio gear as its all vibe gear with a pioneer double din hu but still pretty annoyed

Most car alarm won't trigger if a window is smash :( Car alarm will trigger if you use the car door handle. You can buy a car alarm that get trigger when window get smash. So my guess they climb through the window to avoid the alarm or they got lucky.
Alright just remember to put your belongs out of sight next time :) Thieves won't got through the hassel if there nothing to steal :)
With taking door card offr, I'm going to look that up in the service manual and post it up :)
Thanks sparky, i did have my valubales in the glovebox but i must have left something showing cause the 2 cars next to mine wearnt broken into. lesson well and truly learned:(

Would be a good idea to never again leave stuff in the car, and leave open empty glovebox on display........ thieves now know where you work and that you had cool stuff in the car.
As for window glass, I'd be trying any local wreckers for a price, you will get stung hard for parts thru dealers or thru windscreen places - no chance your insurance covers glass for no excess? (I'm with GIO and they do).
You'll just have to use garden gloves or something similar to pick glass out of door, or possibly a vacuum cleaner - there is good chance that glass shards will bugger the vacuum. Maybe a "stealth" visit to a carwash vacuum?
Its a bugger of a job, but do-able, to swap glass. Count on lots of grazes and frustration as you manhandle the glass into the runners and around the door locks and winder mechanism.
Tip: Use a screwdriver etc to make sure no little shards of window glass are sitting in the rubber channel where the new glass has to to run up and down.....

Definitely go the wreckers route. Was the window tinted? If so, could be a pain to get a tint to match unless you know where it was tinted originally, and they still stock the same materials. If non-tinted, windows are a dime-a-dozen at wreckers, shouldn't be looking at more than say $20, hell might even be worth a trip up here to Brissy.

I did a rear door glass not so long ago on a members car - get the manual out as you need to remove some other trim, i think that little triangle corner piece and the door seal need to come off (well the door seal partially) in order to get the glass out.
the glass itself is held on with two 10mm bolts up the top, you'll need to wind the window down in order to see them, remove that triangle trim piece at the very rear (actually acts as a guide to the window) and you should be sweet

Before you start though vacuum up all the bits of glass. Had my rear screen broken by a flying beer bottle and 2 years later I'm still finding bits of glass throughout the car. lol The stuff gets everywhere, from rear speakers to front dash mat! Didn't bugger up the vacuum cleaner. Wear gloves and wipe all surfaces with a damp rag. Tiny shards can get embedded into carpet, vinyl and seat fabric and rip your skin when you least expect it/run a bare hand over it. Carry band aids and tweezers in the car from now on. (I'm not kidding)
