gday guys
i have a lil conundrum if anyone can shed some light on it. i have a tsk tsk tsk sound coming from the engine. it's around the timing belt area. at first i thought it mighta been a headgasket thing and the sound was air escaping. but that didnt seem likely as i wasnt getting any other symptoms. took it to a mechanic hu sed it was the bearing and that this was a common prob with the magna's. is this the case? n if so which bearing is it and is it a possible DIY?
cheers

Check the idler pulley bearings on the outside belts with the stethoscope trick, you know, put a big screwdriver on a non moving part next to the idler and put the other end to your ear, or gently touch to your teeth. (NOT a method approved by most dentists). When you find the sus bearing pull that belt off and rotate the idler by hand. If it feels rough replace it. Have a look at the belts too.

Definitely a good DIY proposition. Most bearing places can order one in if you are allergic to the Mitsu parts counter. lol I know I am . . . . .

Yes, the screw driver stethescope is the best way to find out abnormal sound sources in the engine bay. You should have bolded "non moving parts" as well :). Just make sure you use a fairly long one and make sure you dont have lose clothing/tie and hair cos you'll need to lean over the engine.

Something like a wheel brace - the long straight original Mitsu issue - works well too. Sticking anything down into a running engine needs a lot of care. People with long hair and ties need to be careful. Safety first. lol
