Did not expect to post so soon (got 1997 3ltr TF Advance 2 weeks ago 121400ks and service history. Driving today in wet conditions and got a whine noise that seems to come from rear nearside wheel area when moving, increase speed increase in whine, then with what sounded like a relay click front passenger side whine stopped, with no "relay click" whine stays but if handbrake lifted a couple of notches up from off whine stops until handbrake fully off again. Have since stopped switched off ignition and checked suspect wheel and its hot. restarted 2hrs later and drove no fault. No ABS fault light any time. Cheers!
May be the handbrake shoes in that wheel dragging either to a seized/rusted cable or the actuating mechanism inside the hub not releasing. Whine may be from the shoes worn down to metal.
Also may be a shot wheel bearing although if it's getting hot it should be rumbling not whining. I'd jack the back wheel up, remove wheel and spin the hub (with handbrake off)...if it drags it 'may' be the shoes...if it's rough it 'may' be the bearing. Good Luck.

Thanks hako for the quick reply, you may be on to something as the brakes are at 83% but handbrake is at 26% according to safety cert. (lots of wear) I got with car. I'll get into it before Friday I hope and post an inspection result. Thanks again.

If the suspect wheel was hot after a long-ish drive with the handbrake lever up two notches, then the handbrake was obviously engaged (even slightly) at that setting and heat is to be expected.
If that wheel was hot after a brief "handbrake up" test and just a general drive, then maybe wheel bearing or brakes are suspect.
I have a kind of wierd noise in my KJ, which may be related - and its def developed after I first bought the car..... hasn't got worse over time and I haven't traced it. Not so much a whine in my case, as a "wobble" noise (not wobble sensation)..... I was thinking slightly bent driveshaft, but my dad reckons its pass rear whereas from drivers seat it sounds like pass front to me.
Looking forward to hearing the outcome of your check-up.......

Thanks Elwyn, hope to find problem by Friday, weather here in Brissie holding things up. handbrake off with whine and disappears when its lifted 1 to 2 notches.
Checked for problem this morning with short run -no whine/noise.
Dont know about your wobble problem, maybe get someone with a good ear for sound as pass. to pinpoint area, I've used a long shaft screwdriver with handle to the ear and poked into engines for noise maybe a pass could do something the same inside car.

UPDATE: Not had a chance to check it yet and car ran ok until last night when noise returned, almost certain its caused by the handbrake as it goes away when handbrake lifted 1notch and returns when fully off.
Hopefully will have it nailed this week as gotta check why I've high fuel consumption about 17l per 100k local driving, not good, but hi'way ok at 8l per 100k

Final update: Found handbrake cable needed small amount of grease as it was sticking and brake caliber needed reseating as it was very slightly off true, problem gone
