I have a TE 96 3L Magna and shes hot.

At the moment the temp gauge is yo-yoing from high to low really quickly. I am totally out of ideas.

So far I have:
Changed the thermostat
Flushed the engine and radiator (radiator was blocked)
Fixed a leak in the radiator (changed the tank)
Changed the hoses
Changed the radiator cap
Replaced the coolant (constantly checked)

I have pressure tested no leaks! However the second fan seems to work only some of time but its Melbourne and doesn’t get over 20 deg.

It does this in all conditions start stop – highway driving. The engine is warm/hot I don’t think it’s the gauge – some bubbling in the reserve tank when the gauge goes hits high.

I have noticed that after fixing the radiator the heater isn’t really getting hot, it’s warm but not hot. And the other thing is it’s just started to idle like a truck but theres no smoke, exhaust is clear (maybe unrelated)

Any ideas?

Maybe there's actually nothing wrong and it's electrical? Maybe some kind of surge that's making the needle jump up and down?

That's all I can think of

Could it be the water pump not pushing the water around ? or would it not flow at all and then the heater should be hot..... still no idea

anyone ?

there are two thermo fans, one is more for the tempreture, and the other is for the air conditioning.

Yeah thats what I thought... but "MR Radiator" said the Aircon one comes on as well when it gets hot. At the moment the aircon one comes on sometimes its cactus but would one less fan really make a difference on a cold day ?

which one is the Aircon fan anyhow divers side or passengers ?

If I remember correctly it is the driver side, but dont hold me to that.

If you want a quick dodgy way to find out, quickly unplug the coolant sensor from the harness and the fan will come on.

Are you losing coolant? If you are then I can almost guarantee it is your water pump. I had something similar happen a few months ago and it took Mitsu 4 attempts till they worked out what was wrong. Basically the water pump was on it's last legs and even though I told them to check it, they knew better than me. Months of frustration and heaps of money later they told me it was the water pump. :swearing: :headbange

Hey BlackVRX,

I dont appear to be loosing too much, maybe a little but it could be from evapouration as it sometimes bubbles in the reserve tank.

did you have a coolish heater though ?

does the pump run off the timming belt ?

No I havent, but I though if the temp sensor was catus there would be no reading and sit on cold.

Its Been Solved....

It was a faulty thermostat, but the problem is the person checking the car blew the head gasket  . Seems this car is possessed ! :tantrum:
