anyhow ive been offered a standard set of 4 struts with pedders springs that are about a 45mm drop..
the dilemma is whether to buy these for $190 or go see mal and get king lows for $240?
my vrx has done 300k and i think it'd be well worth replacing my struts with these ones that have done 160k?

why cant stuff be easy?

Springs and struts that have done 160k are certainly approaching - if not already past - their use by date.

Agree with Red-V about the shocks if they have done 160K - and also consider that Kings Springs seem to be well-regarded in this forum, and Pedders seem to be regularly rubbished.

I put Kings into my TJ Sports immediately after I bought it, have no issues. Have had Mal put Boge Shocks and Kings Springs into my KJ a few months back, and haven't looked back.
In my case, I chose Kings SP (only a bit lower than Std) for the KJ, as I drive rural roads. The TJ Sports - bought pre-AMC days for me - has standard height Kings, not "cool" but effective.

Hey James, I have 18s on King Lows. My avatar is quite a nice shot (hence why I chose it :P), but it's must be because of the angle - normally it looks a little higher and the rims look a little smaller lol. Check out the last few pages of my Members Machine thread (link in sig) if you want a few more pics.

King Lows are a 45mm drop. However VR-Xs are lowered 10mm from factory so it won't be quite as big a drop. My suspension guy measured a 40mm drop on my car.

Have a Google-look at Kings Springs, their website explains what "low" 'super-low" etc means - in the case of Kings SP, these are a TINY drop from standard - not as much as Lows, if my memory serves me correctly.

As the KJ is my "posh/long-distance" car, I did get the slightly-lower SP springs on it - given that it'll do mostly highway miles on trips to Sydney and Melb. I don't think lowered springs and low-profile tyres make any sense at all for comfort or even safety on crap rural roads.

As for your deal, you've been offered tired springs and tired shocks for a bit less than the cost of brand-new well-regarded springs.

When Mal gets back from MMX, have a talk with him - I know for a fact he reckons some of the more lowered springs are unsuitable for performance or longevity of standard height shocks. Its been discussed before in multiple threads - would be a real pain to find in Search, I'd say - as the topic comes up so often. Maybe, while Mal is living-it-up in Adelaide, have a look at Mal's own threads about the various cars he has done up - ie: in Members Machines. He possibly discusses what set-up for Shocks and Springs he uses in his own cars.
