My TJ keeps blowing head light and fog light globes, and while they're not that hard or expensive to replace - I'd prefer if I didn't have to!
Has anyone else had a simillar problem? Is it just a co-incidence or is there an underlying fault?
Thanks,

Did you by any chance touch the globes when installing them? If not, your alternator may be on the way out. Best to hook up a multimeter and see how much juice is being pumped out. Do you notice the headlights go brighter at times?

What bulbs are you using? Brand and Watts?

I don't touch them - but I do notice them going brighter at times. Do you mean to hook the multimeter up to the globes? I have a battery gauge in the dash and it's normally around 13.7volts when driving, and then drops to 12 when ignition is on but not running.

Phillips globes - not sure on wattage, but I usually just take in the fried globe and ask for the same again.

Philips - good brand.
1) are you sure that you are not touching the new globe as it goes in with bare fingers.
2) If you are using one of the "High Efficiency" globes then you can expect the life to be shorter than a regular globe.

3) Alternative cause will be voltage surges. Here the culprit will be the alternator control unit.

watch the battery guage when the headlights become brighter. Don't need to wait for night time. You can drive with headlights on during the day time. But then, you'll have to keep an eye on the guage for fluctuations.

I had my alternator replaced under warranty recently as the charge light will come on occassionally and when it does, the headlights become so bright, they are like highbeams.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will check the earth under the battery box and get a mate to check the voltage from the alternator. Once they check out okay I'll replace all the globes (wearing gloves) :)
Shouldn't have any problems after that...
