Hi all. When I got my tr magna, the block had cracked, and come off the front engine mount (got it for free:) as a result of some serious clutch dumping. It still drives fine (except for a now slipping clutch). I was wondering if anyone had tried to replace the astron in a manual for an auto. Has anyone succeded, or will the gearbox not fit. I have access to a good 2.6 lt, and I plan to put this in if it will fit, and replace the clutch in the process. Also out of interest, how fast does your tr (please state whether it is a 2.6 or 3lt), go from 0-100?

You can fit an auto motor in a manual - i dont think there were any changes auto to manual? although someone will have to confirm.
Mine? 3.5L....something around 7seconds.

2.6 auto and manual engines are the same, but you need to swap the drive plate for the flywheel and clutch.

My 2.6 TS manual gets from 0 to 100 KPH in about 1 week.

My 3.0 TS auto gets there in about a day or two.

Meh! I'm in no hurry. lol

That good sir is epic. "I live my life a quarter mile at a time, for those 22 seconds or less, I'm free" :bowrofl:

hahhaha. I think this will go ahead, I need to get a clutch kit still, and the auto motor is in melbourne but hey;).

eBay has cheap clutch kits for the second gen, about $125 IIRC, Ringwood Auto. Got one off them, nothing wrong with it. Did a write up of how to here somewhere. Some tricks and traps to a clutch swap on a gen 2. Wreckers will have plenty of engines too if you want to buy it locally.

When I bought my first car, 94 TS GLX auto wagon 2.6 carb, we timed it. 0-100 in 18seconds.

Hi. I havnt been on the forums for ages. I am still wating on the second motor. Turns out I may have the equivalent of 3 free tr's for parts hahhahahaa.

I seem to be getting pretty mixed respones, I have not timed the 2.6 lt but mine revs out like crazy. Dont know if that will do any good mind you. I have heard the automatic has a terrible reputation as being problematic, and not partuicularly responsive. I dont know what it is like to drive as I have never been in one. I was in a 3 lt v6 though (1994 I think) magna, and it seemed to lack power down low, start to rev harder at around 3000 rpm, and then loose power again. Maybe there was a problem with this car (it was an auto as well btw).

It appeared that overall (comparing both cars), that the manual 2.6 was similar, but revs like hell and is not as smooth, while the 3 lt is really smooth, does have some decent power once it gets going, and evens out in the upper rev range. Also one other question, suposedly the cars respond really well to premium fuel, anyone tested this?

18 seconds? Wow that is really slow (no offence). I have had no experience with a carb model, but I didnt think there would be that much difference.

Yeah the GLX carby version is really slow compare to the EFI version. Some member say they rev about 3000 rpm whereas the exective model can easily rev up to 5000 rpm. But that might be complete wrong :)

I have a 2.6L TR automatic EFI version, it happliy revs out to 4500-5000 no problems at all. I find it has a enought get and go when it needs but it does get stuck in a stupid hi gear somtimes when your trying to overtake but part from that very happy with the TRactor

My efi manual revs out past 6 pretty well (the guage goes to 8, but red starts at 6 I think). I was sitting close to 6 going 80 in second gear (if my memory serves me right, and I could have easily gone harder however again I hightly doubt it is good for it haha). But it hits some serious acceleration when it gets up in the revs.

That being said I have never pushed it really hard in fear of damage ;).

Yeah I think I could get it to redline but I ain't going to do that not until I get my new motor built lol I find the rev note changes around 3000 rpm :)

I must say I like the sound I get when I get it up in the revs. Lovely:).
