Hi all,

I'm looking to buy this Magna with 182,000km's on the clock. Just had an RACV test done on it and it came up Green = Go on all major parts. Seller won't go below $5,100 with RWC and 9 months rego. I'm thinking it'll need it's timing belt done soon (first was done at 100,000), and there are a few other points that came up on the report that make me feel unsure.

It says the transmission fluid is discoloured and looks in need of a service, but still gives it the green light.

Front pads are 4mm thick, rears 8mm.

Air conditioner says: Pipes and hoses - valve caps not fitted.

Tyres are becoming low in tread.

Engine oil level is slightly below full.

Sorry for the long post everyone, but I just want to make the right decision this time around! I've made some bad decisions in the past, and this time I'm worried that all the costs post-purchase will be too high.

Any help would be most appreciated, thank you in advance!

Timing belt and other bits at 200,000 Km = about $2,000

New tyres = $400 if standard size.

Air con valve caps = $0 (Just pocket them from a wreckers)

Probably some hidden costs, like driveshafts etc $ ???

Try to knock him down using those points as part of your argument. AND do some more comparison shopping.

Thanks for your reply MadMax.

I listed all the things on the report plus the belts being due soon, but he wouldn't budge from $5,100 (down from $5,500).

Perhaps time to get looking again...

Well, I got my TJ Solara for 5.6 at 90 thousand K on the clock.

500 dollars more for half the kilometres. Albeit, I had to do the major service afterward.

p-wii, if your gonna look at spending around that much, check out my 02 VR-X Series II - Silver 5 Speed Tiptronic I'm selling... you may be interested ;)
All the big work has been done on mine with the major service being completed at 190,000 ks and a recent minor service including Auto service. Come and test drive the car if you'd like... trust me you will not be disappointed.

Thanks guys....Dingers deals like yours are a perfect example of why I should keep looking! May I ask, did you know the person you bought yours off beforehand?

And Ezz, thanks for the offer but this'll be for my missus as well and I don't trust her with that much power!

Nope, complete stranger off carsales.com.au

Depends on your needs, but I started modifying my car right away.

If I had another shot, I'd buy either Ezz's VRX or a manual VRX with 200 thousand K's for around the same price or a grand more.

Saves me converting to manual and messing around with bodykits.

Just look at my ride thread in my signature and you'll see all the money I've been hemorrhaging into this car lol

Obviously, if you don't want to do the whole go fast thing then don't bother, but one thing I've learnt is fixing Magnas is cheap as. Don't worry about high K's because it's not a huge drama to drop a relatively new engine in with low K's.
