View Full Version : 2.6 TS Cam/Water Pump Belt

I've noticed my cam/water pump belt was starting to break and it needs change, any know how to do it? I can't seem to find too much information. There's only 2 pulleys involved (cam and water pump), so how do you reduce the tension?

Loosen the water pump bolts and the whole pump turns to release tension on the belt. Put a new belt on, turn the pump to tighten the belt, do up the bolts.

if the water pump is old
it may snap at the 0 ring in the block
when you try to twist it

another way to change the belt is undo the pully cam bolt and
the pully will pull off with the belt

Problem with option 2 is that the new belt will not be stretched like the old belt and if you do it over tight you can snap off the end of the cam, have seen this before

Best you get yourself the proper "O" ring from mits and be prepared to replace the "O" ring, would not be surprised if the pump is also quite old if the belt is and would be coming up for replacement as well

Wait, dont undo any bolts or remove anything, (It's not a cam belt on any 2.6 TS was it?, mine wasnt, they were all the same werent they?).

I have a 2.6L Ts and a while back the pump belt broke, spotted it quick so no damage was done... but I followed the 'instructions' about undoing the bolts and rotating the pump etc, as soon as I turned the bolts and straight away it started leaking at the centre seam of the pump, I freaked and tightened it back up straight away...

As far as I can tell the bolts, even though they aren't designed to hold the pump together, because of its age the bolts had seized to the bolt and loosening it just opened it up.

...Anyway, I found that if you just hook the new belt over pump pulley and half over the engine pulley on the side such that when the the engine is started, it pulls the belt up and into place.

Not quite sure how I can be polite here and not offend but here goes, please dont post if you have no clue which clearly you dont. I am sorry if this offends but is not helping the OP in any way, shape or form

Being a second gen, he does not have a timing belt
The OP stated clearly was the water pump belt, was quite detailed about it
Your method of installing a new belt is wrong and not only is it dangerous but can also damage the camshaft and waterpump
Of course you will get a small amout of coolant leaking as these bolts do in a way partly hold the pressure on teh gasket, if you have de pressurised the system this will be only a small amout

So as I said, sorry if I have offended but please dont post up things that potentially end up hurting someone or damaging an engine

Sorry, I was just saying what I did,

When I needed to replace the belt on mine, I naturally came here for help, I followed the instructions and the pump leaked, I tightened it back up and it didn't stop leaking (trickle, but the pump was always wet underneath), I can only assume I opened a leak channel in the pump gasket.

I tried my method (many days later, only after attempting to consult on this forum if I was doing something wrong), and it worked... the pump still leaks because I loosened the bolt, even if it is a negligible amount (I know I should get it replaced).

Sorry, I didn't realize how dangerous my actions were, I just knew that it worked for me, don't anyone do what I did.

Undoing the water pump bolts did the trick, thanks for the help. I was worried about an issue with the pump, but nothing at the moment.
