Hi I have brought a TR 1991 magna 4 cylinder Auto.
I think this thing must have a fuel leak.
I put petrol in it when we brought it about $20. This car is for my daughter she is only on her Learners so it doesn't get driven much.
After noticing that the fuel gauge was moving very quickly,,,,I waited until the needle was on empty, and then I put another $20 in. This brought the gauge up to Quarter ( It was about 18 ltrs ) I reset the trip meter and the needle is now about 2mm from empty. The trip meter only has 55 klm on it,,,And yes the trip meter is working.
On an old TR like this what would most say should be a reasonable mileage per liter.
The motor seems to run quite well. I have checked the plugs and they seem near new.

Any smoke or strong fuel smells in or around the car?

12L/100km is my best so far lol But on a half tank of fuel I get 200km city driving :)
Hi thanks for the reply, No smoke no fuel smells,, but it seems to thirsty for me. I think some thing must be wrong.
I think maybe fill it up until fuel filler clicks,,then drive it for say 100 ks then fill it again.

Oxygen sensor could be screwed or jack up the car and check for fuel leaks :)
Is there any test you can do for oxygen sensor

From what youve stated, its using around 40L/100. Thats about 10% more than ego's 3 million hp beast lol
If it was burning that much fuel, there would be smoke for sure. If there was a leak, it would stink like theres no tomorrow.
Possible fault fuel gauge/sender?
As you've said, fill to the brim, drive 100km (or as close enough to) and then fill it back up again. When filling up, make sure that it clicks off a few times to make sure it is right at the top. do this both times to be certain.

using the gauge to 'gauge' mileage is not a great idea as the rate in which fuel is used is not represented as a linear equation by the gauge, about the only thing its good for is telling you when you're almost out, when the amber light comes on. you still then have 50-60km of uninterrupted driving (it then gets a bit hairy around fast corners or steep driveways)
Do the fill up and drive test. Then refill to work out km/L of fuel. if they are short trips expect about 13L/100km or 7.5-9km/L in the old money.
Hi thanks for telling me about the amber light. I wonder if this one works.
I would be guessing at this stage but I reckon that it's getting about 15 ltrs per 100 kms.
It has near new plugs and runs smooth, but I suppose there is more that comes in to play.
I just don't want to take it to someone like *********** and they just basiclly put new plugs in it and a quick play with the timing,,as I can do that. ( then want $160+ )
If I pay to get it tuned I want it tuned fully and told if it needs other things replaced
