Giving your make and model would probably help people answer this question :)

All the seatbelt light ever does (in any Magna) is to illuminate briefly as the car is started - illuminates when key first switched to Acc and beyond, and will stay on untl car is started - in which case it goes out after a few seconds. It has absolutely no relationship to whether seat belts are fastened, or whether or not people are sitting on any given seat in the car. (For advanced technology like that, you'd need to buy a '70-'80's Volvo).

It is, largely, pointless, and must (I assume) only be fitted only in the first place due to legislative requirement.

What you have described is a perfectly-functioning Seatbelt Lamp - Magna style.

Our outlander does the full monty. Each seating position has sensors and a separate indicator is used for all passengers below the stereo unit (would have been better if each had their own) and the drivers is in the dash. It beeps initially and lights up and then continues to light up if no seat belt is in and even beeps again after a while if you still have not buckled up. This feature adds a few points to the ANCAP rating. My GTVi, on the otherhand is just a handy little reminder as you start the car, that is all.

My girlfriends work car has seat sensors, it beeps constantly if she puts her bag on the passenger seat. Id hate to have to put up with it if the sensor in the seat or seatbelt clip broke and it never stopped beeping...

I guess either method has its pros and cons. Hey OP, u will get used to it, don't worry!

Just remove the warning bulb from the dash if it annoys you :)

That means the weight sensor needs adjusting. We have our toddlers supply bag on the passenger seat without triggering it (can of milk powder, nappies, wipes, you name it). However, if I lean over with the hand on the seat, the seat belt warning will go off.

Technology overkill! Next they will wire in those sensors to the ECU and have a "no engine start" if your seat belts aren't on, gear stick not in park, and your foot not on the brake!

The AWDs almost do that anyway. Can't start unless in P (as can't take key out unless in P to begin with). Can't take out of P unless foot brake fully depressed. When it conks out due to flat battery, can't even pull it off the road once you lose the brake pressure (if you've put it into P).
