View Full Version : Heater Core Leak

Hey guys,

My heater core is leaking coolant into my passenger footwell.
But surprisingly - I'm not asking about how to sort that out because it's already booked in a Mits-Fix for Mal to fix :D

Now what I have done (under instruction from Mal) is remove the pipe that goes into the heater core, and attach it straight back into the engine (after removing the pipe that comes out of the heater core and goes into the engine). This is so that coolant no longer leaks in the heater core and potentially kill my ECU!
I just realized that probably doesn't make sense, so I believe a flow-diagram is in order.

BEFORE:
engine----pipe----heater core----pipe----engine

NOW:
engine----pipe----engine

Now what I am wondering is:
Will I still be able to drive the car normally? Because it will no longer be leaking and I made sure that I put that pipe on pretty darn good.

I've bothered Mal enough today and it's after hours anyway - so help me out with the advice I know you have AMC!

Yeah mate you should be fine. I believe many people do this as a permanent fix (of sorts) if they aren't worried about having the heater core seals fixed.

Car will drive normally - you just won't have a heater.

Yeah that's what I thought, I just wasn't sure.
Doing that was actually the first engine work I have ever done (not counting putting in a BNC panel filter) in all my 18 years (yeah, I'm young - what of it? :D) so I was a bit cautious.

Thanks!

Its what people have done ever since cars came with heaters and started to leak. lol Car will run without you noticing any difference. When the dash comes out to fix the heater core, you can put it back the way it was and have a heater again.
