Hi
Paid $400 to get my tranny cooler installed. DID NOT expect that at all.............
Anyways hte fella put it right behind the front bumper just on the left behind the number plate.
There is no air vents directly pushing air into it. My front bar is a VRX.
Just wondering if any air flies around in there enough for it to cool my tranny on hot summer days, or should i add a fan?
cheers

What so $400 just to fit the one you provided?

yeah,
I was expecting like 200 max.
Will not say where i got it done, because i actually think the bloke is tops (not for charging that much of course)
Anyway, back to the question, do you think it even makes any difference in that position?
should a thermo fan be used there?
Mines in a similar position.....it'll work fine there!

That position is fine. Well hidden and protected from bugs, rocks etc. Plenty of turbulant air flow there too, 90 degree transmission oil and 20 degrees air should cool nicely. Make sure the hoses are attached firmly to the body work or protected in some way where they might rub though. When its all together and everything is hot, feel both pipes, should be a noticeable temperature difference.
Do a search for my threads on trans coolers. Make sure the hoses are well away from the radiator fans as the temperature rises, the hoses sag. Mine was near servering point when I took it to a dealer to have a look. Anyhow, the radiator and condensor fans should suck air to cool it. BTW, mine cost me (including the cost to re-route the hoses) $340 ($40 for the cooler, $200 for the initial installation and trans flush and $100 to get it re-routed).
Radiators/heat exchangers are really fitted in crazy places on motor vehicles - the trans cooler passes it's heat onto the A/C condensor which then adds it's heat which then gets passed onto the engine radiator....preheated.

That is an outrageous cost in my opinion. My cooler was $20 from pickapart and i fitted it in about an hour, directly below my number plate (there is an opening there on my bumper) to get airflow. its not a hard job, imsure the forum could of helped you out!!
To the OP ... Mine cost me $0 to install...check the DIY thread HERE that you obviously missed (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74298&p=1168192&viewfull=1#post1168192). Could have been done easily with a little help from your friends.

Did you install a second gen cooler into your third gen?

That seems to be the norm if you can find a 2nd gen one in good condition at the wreckers. I spent 2 weeks going from wreckers to wreckers and the cheapest was $65 and was crap. Just happen to come across one on eBay a guy down the road from where I work who is selling their brand new, unfitted Canadian made one (he could not fit it to his hilux in the spot without fans) for $40. Remember that the 3rd gens do have a cooler which is at the bottom of the main radiator. The extra cooler helps cool the oil better.

Ask him what his hourly rate is and how many hours he took doing it, then just stare him right in the eye.

$400 is a blatant RIP OFF. 5 hours @ $80 per hour? Even Mitsubishi themselves wouldn't charge that much.

The one i got was on a 3rd gen at the pickapart, its the same as the one pictured by the OP. Excellent condition.

Hi can someone tell me if this one would fit my TJ http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pwr-Transmission-cooler-/170617919028?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b99ed634
You need to find out the inlet and outlet diameters. Otherwise could always use adapters. There shouldn't be a problem dimension wise. Just go to Bunnings and purchase a strip of aluminium or stainless steel to fabricate mounting brackets/tabs. A 1 metre length of 2mm thickness and 20mm wide should do. One side can be mounted to the centre mount and the otherside using the fabricated bracket.

I'll be installing a similar cooler on my TH for the power steering. What inlet/outlet diameter do I need?

How much hose would I need if I was putting the oil cooler on the Passenger side
like this

About a meter will do...that will give you enough to consider for trimming etc... Before you cut, connect up both ends and move the loop to where you want it, and then cut. Any excess cut off last.

Just to make sure the pipe I cut was the one on the Drivers side that one seemed the coolest is this right hope so I have already done it.
cheers
