im not sure if this is in the right area but i was wondering if theres a notable difference in exhasut sound when u have extractors? my housemate has a 99 TH magna with pretty much same exhasut setup as me (2.5'' catback to a short redback muffler, done at the same guy) he's car sounds pretty sweet and mine just sounds like poo i even got a hotdog resonator put in to try ease the rasp up but it pretty much did nothing, should i invest in a longer muffler? im kinda regretting getting rid of the stock Sports muffler now? if not i guess ill save up for a varex and just hyave next to no sound when i want..

Do not get a Varex. Do not. Ever. Never.

well i have a TJ sports mate and i had a 2.5 cat back done on my car single muffler, not sure what it is but alot smaller then the orginal and a hotdog and it is very loud and fairly deep so im not sure whats going wrong with ur exhaust, if i knew the muffler i would tell you the guy just fitted it for me :/

I hope those with Sports/VRX etc do realise that you gain pretty much nothing in fitting a 2.5" cat back. Only thing you'll probably gain is noise and drone if auto. OP. The extractors made my OEM sports exhaust produce a more noticable burble and got rid of the drone inherant in AWDs with the OEM sports muffler.

Sound difference from extractors depends on their design.

I used to have a Daihatsu and the 4-2-1 extractors on it gave it a sound that many people mistook for a WRX !

So yes, extractors can change the sound of the exhaust, but so can mufflers, hot dog/resonators, pipe size, pipe material, distance between components (cat/res/muffler) etc.

sorry to say but i felt a gain mate... i would say a few kilowatts and i have a TJ sports

i will agree about the drone, tho mine isnt to bad with windows up... i enjoy the noise and espically with music cant even hear it

Generally speaking, more noise = less restriction.

So if the Executive's restrictive muffler replaced with the Sports / VRX muffler is good for ~6 flywheel kW, then a good straight through design must be good for another 1 or 2 kW.

From my experiences I got with a rule of thumb that if there isn't a 10% difference, you won't notice it. So that means we'd need a 16kW improvement to notice it (if my rule of thumb works).

FYI, in the "best exhaust you've ever heard" thread, I just uploaded an exhaust sound track. I'll post it in my members ride thread too.

Cheers, Oggy.

Yea im not sure mate but i felt a gain, when i put foot to the floor at 55 odd it would change gear quicker and the revs would jump up and i would fell a more significant "kick" compared to the stock exhaust so yea im not sure mate i got a full cat back done completely removed the middle muffler just put a small hotdog.

Put it on a dyno for a back to back comparison. The Sports/VRX muffler is already a straight through design. With straight through designs, noise differences can be attributed to solely what was used to reduce the sound (fibreglass/steelwool etc).

Plenty of places. Any dyno that does RWD can do FWD. They just rotate the car around. Its AWD dynos that are rare.

SKR can do FWD dyno tuning. Re-flash time, maybe?

well the muffler i have would be probably half the length of the sport muffler and a straight thru design rather then an s bend even that may mean atleast 1-2kw even tho that may not make a difference say to speak if u had too of the same skilled drivers same car same km and same weight on 1/4 will the 164-5kw have a 0.001 gain over the 163kw that may mean nothing to most but that gain would make some people happy.. and when u start doing bigger mods e.g. cams, ecu flash or whatever else is up there other then FI it may lead to some more extra kw from the exhasut but im not that mechanically minded so i wouldnt know
