hi all, just wondering what is wrong with my 3.5 TH auto. ive posted before about it and someone suggested it may be the inhibitor switch.

jist of the story is it has a new battery and all the fuses seem fine, but after immobilising it and turning the key all it does it click just the once. there is no sound of the starter motor trying to turn it over.

does anyone know what this is? and if it is the inhibitor switch, how to go about fixing it? (keeping in mind that im not overly auto savvy, and an idiots guide style would be benifital)

Thanks in advance :)

Just pointing out that the immobiliser is activated the second you remove the key from the ignition. The remote is only for alarm and remote locking/unlocking. Have you tried starting the car and then stopping it without removing the key and then try starting the car again? Can the car be started at all in any way?

have you check the wirings running to the starter? prehaps they could ahve come lose, if you dont know where it is, its on the front bottom side of the engine

That click is probably your starter solenoid engaging. which, if its engaging means it's getting a valid signal from your ignition barrel. Sounds like a crapped out starter motor to me.

Have you tried another starter motor?

Could give the motor a few taps with a hammer

You normally tap a seized solenoid if the car cannot hot start and not the starter motor.

Just bash away at both just to be sure. lol

No you hit the motor bit aswell in case the rotor is striking the magnets, pretty sure hitting it is meant to dislodge the rotor, but I havent been studying auto elecs since i quit at the start of the year so I could be wrong...(but im sure im on the right track there...)

just back from trying all the different things listed. i tried to see if pushing the car whilst in gear might free it up a tad, turns out the car can be moved with it in gear, with the exception of park (P). Is this a normal thing, or is this another symptom of what could be wrong??

Also, when turned to start, the car makes a whinning sound, like the starter motor maybe, is just turning itself over?

Means the solenoid isnt engaging or the fork inside is broken, you'll need another starter motor.

i.e. it should ENGAGE before the motor starts to spin, its not engaging but spinning so could be the fork broken I reckon
