Just wanted to know if there are any tips for removing an ECU from a third gen.

I have an idea that they are forward of the gear shifter, against the firewall.
I'm guessing, that theres probably a screw or two either side. And at least one large proprietry plug with a keeper lug.

I plan to have the battery removed from the car.
I know to reposition the HD plastic film back over it after I'm done to guard against any condensation from the A/C unit.
Repower when fitted.
Anything else?????
Thanks in advance.
Its having a little trip to Adelaide. You know what I mean. SKR baby. Steve Knight Racetek.

I know its been flashed before. But if you were there last time, you'll know why she's getting new numbers.

And one more thing, which order to reconnect the battery ( i.e. -neg First or +Pos First, to avoid any fuse problems...

Please don't spam this thread, it will be a good thread for reference.

Did my searches came blank. So I'll put a few Key words in this post like engine control unit removal remove computer engine management Post ECU Steve knight Racing Racetek Tuning Reflash Post

Guys, please remember that this is thread is part of the Technical forums, no spam/off-topic posts/general banter are allowed.

Please only reply if you can assist SH00T with his queries.

Mate, AFAIK Steve Knight just plugs his reflash machine (laptop?) into the OBD2 port, no need to remove the ECU at all.
Tried a search but the search function obviously isn't fully working yet since the recent server crash. But there's bound to be a thread or two somewhere in the 3rd Gen or Tech Torque sections which confirms (or not!) that the ECU doesn't need to be removed.

KJ.

Maybe post it in one of those ESD safe bags that computer parts are packaged in.

With the battery I always connect negative/ground first.

Sorry mate, I misread you original post ("It's having a little trip" = the whole car and not just the ECU is having a little trip) and took it to mean that you were making a trip to Adelaide to see SKR. Should have read you post more closely, 'spose it is a bit far from Qld to Adelaide just for an ECU reflash!

I'm assuming this is on the TL? The ECU sits differently in these compared to earlier models; unless it's just a FWD/ AWD thing?

Remove the 2 grey plastic side panels around the shifter.
Pull carpet down out of your way.
Remove the steel panels for easier access - this may not be 100% necessary but I find it a bit easier to move my large hands around. :)
Remove the footrest.
There'll be 2 10mm bolts holding the drivers side in & one 10mm nut holding the passengers side in, IIRC.
Depending on the spec of your car, there'll be 3 or 4 plugs plugged in. Remove these & your done.

EDIT: The plugs can be undone by hand, no clips as such holding them in. I don't think it'll make any difference whether you connect + or - first to the battery. I certainly didn't take any notice when I did mine.

(If I've forgotten anything, please feel free to correct me!)

If you're in the mood for a new O2 sensor, now is the time to replace it as you'll be in the right spot to unplug it now too.

All good. took about 30 mins.
Left the plastic grey panels in place.
Start on the Drivers side, Remove footrest, Pull down carpet, remove metal guard. 2 x 10 mm Bolts.
Pass side, Remove trim under Glove box, Pull down carpet, remove metal guard. 1 x 10 mm Bolts. Disconnect ECU and remove out Pass side.
4 Speed TL/TW ecu has 4 plugs.

Many thanks again Alscall.

No problem. You have my number, (I think?), so give me a bell when you're down!
