Hey guys

I'm starting to look at options for upgrading my exhaust. I'm liking the idea of a varex muffler so I can ninja around when need be and have it loud and proud when not, (thinking this one (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/XFORCE-VAREX-MUFFLER-REMOTE-SOUND-CONTROL-WRX-EVO-/140467544151?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b484a057)in particular) but what are your reccomendations for the best performance and sound for the rest of it. I'm thinking headers (assuming pacies is the way to go) but its the stuff in between I'm unsure about, do I need to bother with a high flow cat and should I go a resonator in between. I'm basically after a ballsy sound without the raspiness, drone shouldnt be too much of an issue because of the varex I can just put it on quiet mode when cruising. Also would that varex muffler I posted be the most suitable for my car, I'm guessing 2.5' inlet is the correct size and I like the idea of the twin tips.

Just if you didn't know im pretty sure Varex mufflers are illegal in all eastern states so if you got one i would recomend a muffler further up the pipe. Or just don't get pulled over. Also, depending on the headers you will not get the most out of them without a hi-flow cat and a tune but this is really depending on how much performance you aim to gain.

If you your muffler not making loud noise there is no way you ll get defected. Varex or no varex don't get pulled over when it wide open. Not sure why people bag varex so much, its a very simple & great idea, in either case having canon is illegal anyways due to noise generated as least with varex you can quieten it down. IMO the best bang for your buk is to put sports muffler will give you most gain for $$ spent.

I have a gtvi so I already have the sports muffler and I think even though varex's are illegal It'll be pretty small odds It will get noticed, and If it does then so be it.

look honestly, if you want it put it on. Im not gonna sit here and say don't put Varex on because they are illegal, my tinted windows are illegal, wheels are more than 2' out and i have tinted tail lights.

If you want it, put it on, but if you get dicked its your on fault :) just have a bolt on waiting and ready incase you have to go to EPA

Varex are only illegal if the exhaust noise level is over the limit when it's fully open. Which it almost certainly will be (being effectively a straight pipe), hence the 'varex is illegal' talk.

I think the law states you cannot have any valves that adjust the noise of the car despite the loudest noise it makes, which ofcoarse is stupid as some cars come stock with noise adjustments.

isn't it legal if you dont have control over it? ie the ve's open up when it hits a certain RPM but the car controls it?

That could be correct, varex is all manual though.

ahhh my bad. i guess it would be luck of the draw, if you dont draw attention to yourself then you might be lucky. But i mean if your a p plater with any mods you will be checked out, upto you on that one.

Let us know how you go OP

I believe it's only legal if it was factory fitted. It's not allowed as a modification. Jaxxy, I've just replaced my muffler with a Lukey LR229 (or something similarly numbered) and it's quite deep and rumbly but not overly loud if you're gentle on the accelerator, but give it a stomp and you know that there's an aftermarket exhaust on it!

IMO, this is a good compromise and in a way it is a Varex muffler. Just that the buttefly valve that controls the noise is in the throttle body. :)

Just for your information, and to clear up all the bad info and assumptions in here, the requirement for noise in a car built after 1982 is 91db at 2/3 of the maximum power RPM, measured from 1.5m from the exhaust tip.

Also, it is illegal to modify an exhaust in any way. "Modify a silencing device added to a vehicle" Do any of these things at your own risk.
