Have finally had enough of the vibrating rear view mirror on my TH. Am looking for options for a replacement that has a better design. I know the TJ are the same but not sure if any other models had a better design. Hopefully someone has changed the rear view mirror on their 3rd gen? 380 or maybe Pajero?

Use a 2nd gen mirror, Been told the holes are in the roof bracing ready to go? (someone confirm that please)
and trust me, stock 2nd gen mirrors do not rattle.

Now that's a smart idea! I will check for mounting holes tomorrow. My TJ mirror is flaking off its silver backing anyway.

The 380 mirror are better as they a grub screw to hold them nice and tight :)

Anyone know if the 3rd Gen Chromatic Mirror uses a grub screw instead of the spring clip mount?

i was gonna put a second gen mirror into my tj, all the mounting points are there under the roof lining, u just need slightly thicker screws!

No, there's no screw in the 3rd gen chromatic mirror.

Thanks for that info, I haven't looked at my TJ yet, worth doing though. CBF gluing the original peeling mirror to the new screen (when I get it in). lol The "7 years bad luck" only applies to household mirrors, not car mirrors, so stop fretting. lol

Thanks. Still assessing options at this point. Will keep it in mind.
Cheers.
I doubt you'll fix the rattling problem regardless of which mirror you use if you use the existing mount. Its the mirror vibrating against the glasses your hearing, so be it the standard mirror or the 3rd gen chromatic mirror, it'll do the same thing. You need to secure the mount, or use a different mounting solution.

I happen to think that you may have a loose steel clip inside the alloy mounting base of your existing mirror. Thought I had replied in this thread yesterday, must not have gone thru.
The black curved base near where the mirror mounts to the glass is cast alloy, and inside that cast alloy base is a springy steel clip which actually grabs onto the "plate" glued to the glass.
The steel clip sits over some projections of the cast alloy, and these alloy bits are either stamped or pressed to spread the alloy an "rivet" the steel clip into the alloy base.
Read, or work out, how to unclip the mirror from the mounting plate on the glass (basically get a small screwdriver between the clip and the metal-glued-to-glass moounting plate, angling up at the bottom of the mounting near the glass - with the screwdriver parallel to the glass. YOu need to overcome the spring tension of the steel bit, so that a little locking tab is no longer engaged against the mounting plate. You then need to push upwards - along the angle of the glass - to slip the mirror base off the mounting plate).
Its tricky to stabilise the alloy base in something that will grip it and not mark it. However, a few taps on the alloy bits with either a punch or a screwdriver should tighten the union of metal clip inside the alloy. A warning tip: the alloy is quite soft, so don't absolutely hammer into it, you could distort or break the alloy base.
