Looked at a TS today with 138k on it...
drove beautifully, body is fantastic.
When driven, the car had a light white smoke coming from it... Definately wasnt condensation.
After stopping and revving it, a large amount of white smoke came out, and with another a black smoke came out... then the smoking really calmed down and only a bit came out with a big rev...
What is the problem? Anyone have any idea? Build up of something?
Cheers

could be the piston rings

My dad suggested that.... so that would mean unburnt fuel?
And, what is a rough cost for a mechanic to do that?

oil would cause the black smoke... you can buy a set of rings from any decent auto shop and if you have the right tools you can do it yourself.
as a price of a mechanic to do it i wouldnt be 100% sure as ive always done my own work

Fair enough....
If anyone could give me a rough price on getting a mechanic to do it or even the amount of hours it would take that would be good.. Will most likely be getting the car checked out thursday aswell, just to be sure.

ring around for mechanic costs for the price as it could be more or less depending on whats wrong defs shop around tho don't go with the first quote
Probably not very cheap, as I think the bores are re-honed as well, and if they are out of round also need to be machined. And to get to them, the heads need to come off, and if they are warped, also need machining. And while they are off they should probably have a bit of reconditioning to future-proof them. An alternative is how much for a 2nd hand engine, fitting and fluids? If you ring city dismantlers they should be able to give you a price, and ring around and probably will be able to save at least 30% on that. I think a low kms 3.5 was $1200 from city dismantlers, and at another wreckers a low kms 3.5 sports was $900 and probably cheaper to fit too.

Someone suggested that the culperit is too much oil? He replaced the oil recently so this could be the problem.. Anyone had any experiences with too much oil and smoke?
I am going to the guys house soon to check the level and if its too much take some oil out... Does this sound like a good idea?

Maybe find out what type of oil was used and what grade of oil?
I made the mistake of using oil that was too thin for my older engine and it puffed a fair bit at start up and went away after a while, i have since replaced the oil with thicker grade oil and given it a good proper flush beforehand. No more smoke at start up now.
I have also made the mistake of using too much oil (not good) and i recall i had extra smoke from the exhaust then too,
Hope its all sweet.

Oil smoke is blue.
Black smoke is too rich fuel mixture. Nothing to do with rings/need new engine etc.
My TS V6 with 240,000 km on it still has the original factory honing marks visible on the bores. (unless someone rebuilt the engine before I bought it, but I doubt it)
Black smoke is possibly leaking injectors or crook temp sensor, ECU thinks the engine is still cold when it isn't and dumping more fuel in.

Black smoke only occured once, after a large rev (close to 4/5k revs)
The smoke is definitely white....
I checked the oil and indeed it is about a third of the full amount above the full amount.... just above the twirly bit of the dipstick? :P
I am having my mechanic check it out tomorrow, should be an alright car if nothing is wrong!! (i.e. just too much oil)
p.s. grats on the 2.5k posts :P
