catastrophic transmission failure.

It definately affects the 4-sp auto transmissions, in the TJ-era. We had a series 1 (2000) KJ ei with 4-sp tippy fail at 57K, and a TJ Exec (2001 model) with non-tippy 4-sp (same box really, but the manual vs tippy control seems to make no difference). Tj failed at maybe 150-180K.

If you want a really good explanation of the Wave Spring drama
- here's a good US site directed at the repair trade: http://www.transmissiondigest.com/tech/TD200508/200508ShiftPointers/200508ShiftPointers.htm

I do remember seeing somewhere that it affected the TJ models or 2000 to 2002 but I can't remember where. I know of two people who have TJ's and they both had the same problem.

Just curious as I found a nice 04 model and I wasn't fussed on it if it could potentially have this issue.

My TJ 4 speed auto failed at about 190,000ks for that precise reason, it destroyed the pump. I got reconditioned unit do you guys rekon they would have fixed the problem??

What exactly are the symptoms of this?

Need to figure out if this is affecting my Ralliart or not. The Auto seems to be made out of hopes and dreams these days the way it's working. Foot flat to the floor up a hill to overtake at 60km/h and it decides 5th is an excellent gear for this, so it doesn't bother dropping back.
Combined with a massive wait time between Reverse and Drive engaging and general slowness and it's really starting to irritate me.

Andrei apparently the Mitsubishi replacement parts are not prone to have this occur again. The spring which fails is apparently much stronger/thicker.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

In regards to warning signs i had absolutely none! Gearbox was behaving absolutely normal. Then one day i was taking of & when gear box shifted from 1st to second 2nd, snaping sound & thats it, would not show any signs of life. Didnt shift into any gear, just stuck in neutral. My fluid was also clean.

In my case, also, box was performing absolutely perfect and normal. Then a sickening brief crunch sound.

I think the neutral indicator in the cluster had time to blink maybe once or twice, and suddenly no drive either forwards or reverse.

Nil further noises occured, cos the oil pump was destroyed - there was no fluid flow and thus no moving parts.

Its possible that a broken wave spring could cause other symptoms initially, but once a piece of broken spiral wave spring jams the rotor against the stator of the oil pump - its a very brief cruch, then shattered oil pump gears and you are at a standstill.

doesnt seam like that issue, get it serviced, including full transmission flush and disconnect the battery, for 10 secs, reconnect, start and let idle for 5-10 mins.
will your car drop back a gear if you use the tippy mode?
