howdy boys (and girls?)
quick question, i've been thinking about a possible engine swap (6g74 DOHC), reckon it would be worth while?

Just going from what I think I remember reading on these forums, the DOHC engine isn't an easy swap. Gearbox and/or intake are on the wrong side?

The 3.8L (380) engine is a more straightforward swap though with a number of people having already done this and I think the majority are AWD Magnas too!

6G72 DOHC TT engine was also discussed or tried at some point, so maybe it was that one that had the 'wrong side' issues ???

Have you tried searching the forums? I'm sure I've read about DOHC engine swaps somewhere on here.

Cheers!

Richo, if you want to contact me directly in relation to the 380 into AWD I have done this and can let you know the costs and benefits for you

Not really, As it's a totally different engine, despite the similar engine codes

Correct, all opposite.
380 motor would be a much more worthwhile investment.
DOHC swaps are not very good if you think about money spent vs gains had specially with a growing SOHC performance parts list.

380 motor swap would be as hard as a 6G74 DOHC swap into an AWD 3000GT. Very similar.

Actually, what is the benifit of a DOCH head over the SOHC ?

Do they have the same number of valves?
Are the combustion chambers different because of wider valve angles on the DOHC?

Any benefits in cam timing can be achieved in an SOHC with a custom ground cam, although it's definitely not as flexible.

Actual flow figures I'll need to dig up. Only real benefits are the ability to customize intake and exhaust cam's as you desire. with adjustable cam gears I've retarded the exhaust cam's 3deg and advanced the intake 1deg for a VERY nice power increase.

Your other two questions, well yes, still 24 valves, in regards to valve angle, i'll find that information and post it.
End of the day if you have a 2nd gen, the DOHC motor is what you pop in, if you have a 3rd gen, the motor you have already is a great base to work from, but the downfall is with adjustable cam gears, your either advancing one and retarding the other, or retarding one and advancing the other, unless like you said you get a custom cam grind.

All in all, still an OHC 6g74 with 24v's!
