Whats the go with the optional factory sub in the parcel shelf on the Tj's? Where they a really shallow mount sub or is it that the hole has not been cut out in the factory on mine? There is the holes for the screws to go in but the mount depth would only be about an inch at best if it was mounted in the cavity....

IMHO there was never a factory sub in the TJ vehicles. The pressing is there, and in TE/KE it was actually stamped-out and a blanking plate screwed in. In subsequent cars, the hole was never stamped out. OPinion on these forums in the past seemed to consider that cutting the hole out of the parcel shelf would likely constitute an illegal mod - unable to modify the parcel shelf as it is a structural component. (This view comes from my memory of reading these forums, its not my opinion).

bugger. Would definately be illegal to drop a sub in there if its cut out but I thought if some came factory with a sub there I could do a clean cut job and try and mask it off as a factory extra. Bugger

Most free air subs are not worth the time and money spent on them. They are A LOT of work to get them sounding half decent.
Best of sticking to a conventional boxed type sub.
Upon ripping apart a diamante 30m at a wreckers with life a little while back, we found the parcel shelf complete with a factory 10" sub mounted in. Poor AUDM specced cars means the sub port was never used locally

The two 6 X 9's in the back of a TJ could be replaced by something more substantial of the same size, surely?

I suspect I saw the same Diamante 30M carcass at Pick-n-Payless that Dave mentioned.... I actually met Rod/Apricot Rocket that day. He was ogling the "captains chairs" front seats IIRC.
As well as the Sub in the parcel shelf, it had an amp mounted under the parcel shelf or in the boot. Also had a weird little oddment bin in parcel shelf, which under a plastic lid was just a cloth bag hanging under the parcel shelf. I have an Infinity amp from the Mitsi Clearance Adelaide place - was a freebie from Caine, but I don't have the wiring loom or plugs for it,..... it'll remain a peperweight I guess.
More Pick-n-Payless sins - I got the interior photochromatic mirror from a KF a couple of weeks back, but didn't bother with the drivers external mirror. Went back a few days ago, thinking maybe to get the drivers mirror - but some douche had tried to remove the mirror glass, and cut the power wires to the photochromatic bit. ...... then left the glass in the engine bay, with the glass/gel layers buggered. Another good thing was teh first TL wreck I have seen there - Hope it was a member in here who got the TL steering rack - I couldn't be arsed about it, and was gone by a couple of days ago. Steering pump is still there in the TL.

Yeah I am running amped Sony 100watt rms 6x9 4 ways in the shelf and Jaycar Kevlar splits in the front but was thinking of dropping a sub in for a little more defined bass but did not want to sacrifice boot space on boxing one as I have 2 kids, one 5 and the other 8 months. The 6x9's are good and carry plenty of bass but lets face it a 6x9 is never going to be as good by itself without a sub.

I'd have a sub firing into the cabin from behind the rear armrest with the armrest down of course.

was thinking of that. I have a 4 channel sitting in there at the moment. looks neat and because its recessed it doesnt get damaged with the pram in the boot.

It sounds better if you have the sub facing away from the armrest hole, i've found.
Is it possible to unscrew the whole parcel shelf at all or is it welded in? Either to swap it with one that has the hole stamped out, or to make it easier than trying to cut out the hole with an upside down jigsaw...

if you were gonna do it, youd hav to mount an air tight box up under the parcel shelf to get any desent bass as those free air subs are utter crap (my opinion, had two free air 12s in a single cab ute, replaced with one 10 inch boxed sub, went so much harder!)
sounds like way too much effort to me tho
just get a 10inch in a small custom (home made :D) box and mount it in the easiest place for you
also +1 for subs sound heaps better when NOT facing into the car!

This. I guess if you were keen, you could get a custom box made up so you could run a regular sub, but I think it'd be too much effort.
I'd get a custom fibreglass box made up to fit in behind the tailights. A member (Bigs) used to make them - they were really neat - but it wouldn't be hard to get a pro to make up one for you. It wouldn't be dissimilar to Shaynes (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49740&p=1082339&viewfull=1#post1082339).
I can fiberglass, but not so keen on fiberglassing to the parcel shelf while its in the car, since I'm sure I'll get sick of the smell of resin once I find the car smells like it forever. I really like bass, but I need the boot space sometimes, and would prefer to have free boot space in the 3rd gen to put stuff on rather than throwing it on the leather.
