View Full Version : Electrical Issues (Power Mirrors)

Time to make a tool of myself once again when someone points out an otherwise simple answer, but...

I haven't been able to make my power mirrors work. Since neither of them work, I think it's safe to assume that either the switch or a fuse has gone. Wiring is also possible I suppose. I'm looking under the dashboard and in the engine bay at the moment for a fuse that controls this circuit, and so far haven't found anything, no references to it in the operators manual, nothing.

Does this circuit operate off one of the other fuses? I haven't noticed anything else not working at this stage but since i'm still learning all the ins-and-outs of the car, it's possible i've missed it.

Failing that, I suppose there's a good shot that the issue lies with the power mirror control switches. In that case I just need to know how to remove it from the dashboard.

Already done a search for mirrors, power mirrors, power mirror fuse, power mirrors don't work, etc both across the forum and in the third gen forum specifically. I'm guessing this isn't an issue that comes up extremely often.

To remove the mirror control, use a rag covered flat blade screwdriver adn carefully prise in behind the outer part of the switch surround, it will pop out then unplug it.
If it is the control switch, I have a spare here that you can have.
I know the mirror controls ties in with something else but cant remember

Wiring Diagram says its Fuse no: 8 - a 20amp fuse. Think it means the fuse box in drivers footwell. (That's from a TJ wiring diagram, in the PDF Workshop Manual).

EDIT: Bit more digging in Chapter 54 (Chassis Electrical) of the TJ-era PDF Workshop Manual.

No: 8 20 Amp (Yellow)

Washer / wiper switch, rear washer / wiper motor, rear intermittent wiper relay, wiper motor, rear washer / wiper switch, remote mirror switch, audio remote control

Sadly, there is no PDF file workshop Manual for TE or TF series cars. Don't think much would have changed in the fuse allocation though.

There's a lot of stuff shared on that fuse - if fuse was gone you'd notice some of that other stuff, surely.

Checked the 20A fuses, one is for the control stalk and instrumentation, the other is for the central locking system. Checked both and neither were blown. So either the switch is the culprit, or the fuses are significantly different on the KF from the TJ. I had a quick look around for anything that could be the power mirror fuse symbol, didn't find anything.

Pulled the mirror control out of the dashboard and tried the one off the KR. Worked fine. Refitted the KF switch back in and that worked as well, although it was intermittent. Time to replace it.

I think that's just about everything electrical, apart from one of the fog lights that has an incredible amount of rust in it, cleaned most of it off the glass, but the reflector's toast. :(

Have you got access to electrical contact cleaner or chrome spray paint? If not I'll take your bits to work and see if I can shine up the 'flector or make the switch work.

A mirror-switch from self-serve wreckers should be easily available and not too pricey, no ?

Would be good if the contact cleaner spray revives it, but its an easily-retrieved item (just pops out of the dash hole), and I'd expect a straight-swap for a wreck-spare might be the way to go.

Just for fun, mind, could someone price these at the Spare Parts counter and post up - so we can all have a good laugh?

I've sprayed two of them with contact cleaner, but once they come apart, they never go back together again properly. You can snap them back together, but every one i've opened up and cleaned doesn't work, even if you put it back together exactly the same as it was prior to dismantling.

The fog light is beyond repair. The bulb holder fitting is completely rusted, the chrome's come off the reflector, the adjustment point is cracked and the mechanism to adjust the reflector inside the light housing is seized as well. The plastic housing of the entire light is still usable, although it's also cracked, all the screws and bolts are rusted out... just about the only part of it that's still good is the mounting bracket to bolt it into the car. I've sent off an email to Mitsiwreck for a price on a replacement light, but from experience dealing with them in the past i'm not expecting anything cheap. I know of one other yard that may have them, but they're not open until Monday.
