How involved is it to take an engine out of a TF? I'm thinking of hiring a hoist and changing the timing belt etc myself but not sure what to disconnect etc before lifting it out

You dont need to talk the engine out, just support it on a jack so you can take the end engine mount off.
Its a fiddly job but doable

For a timing belt lifting the engine out is a bit drastic. "Its a fiddly job but doable" with the engine in, as ol' fart said. Any other work you need to do on the engine?

On this subject tho, I'm pulling out an engine but never done it before. Is it easier to pull out engine and transmission together or try and disconnect while in bay still? (auto btw)

With an auto just leave the trans in, take off the front ilder and main pulley and you will have just enough room
