I have a TL 3.5 Petrol that has an issue with starting. I turn the key and the car will momentarily start and then it will power down and switch off. It used to happen once in a blue moon but now it is happening every time I start the car. I am able to get the car started providing i put my foot on the accelerator and give it some juice. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Possibly a faulty idle motor if you need to keep your foot down to keep
It going.....

Had the same problem in my TJ, get a new battery and it will fix it. (can always borrow a battery to test this just in case it's not the problem).
Assuming it comes from the immobiliser not recieving enough power and shutting down the engine or something along those lines

Ok i had this exact problem on the w.e, take the plastic panel that has your bonnet lever on it off, exposing you immobiliser, (black box on right) on the left there will be single black cord with a white plastic connector that might be wrapped in grey foam, anyhow have a play with it, that was my problem! Otherwise slide out the immobiliser and jigger the 3 plugs on the back.
Assuming that tj is the same. Hope this helps!

To throw it out there, i first thought of a fuel pump that can't keep up or has a minor blockage.

OP,
So you can crank the engine and it fires, immediately then dies??
If you then restart the engine does it start the second time.??
If the above 2 are true then it is the battery.
Now have had the same problem twice.
New battery and the problem goes away for 3 years or so.
Gerry.

thank you guys for all your help. very much appreciated. spud100 when i do crank the engine it does fire immediately then dies. when i restart the engine the second time it fails to start at all. I have to then switch the car off put the keys back in and then crank the engine but have to give the accelerator some juice otherwise it'll fail again.

Adriano,
Very much behaves like the battery is on the way out.

Hi,
I have a 99 TH and had the same issue. Took it to a mechanic and he could not pinpoint it. I did notice though that if you turn the ignition on and wait for the orange enigine light to go out then start the engine it would start first time every time. Note that I knew the battery was on the way out. Recently I changed the battery and the car will start straight away without waiting for the light to go out.

mine does it to,im gona try and get a new immobiliser ring first,I tried spraying wd in the keyhole and it woked for a bit ,I think it could have something to do with a worn key maybe.

vrawd, try swapping battery, common issue is the ECU doesnt believe there is enough voltage in the battery, so to save the electrics it shuts the car down. well to my understanding anways, i had this issues fiddled with the black box, took to auto sparky, said the battery was fine and everything and still had problems! so thought eh dunno how old the batt is so bought a new one, year on no issues :)

Had the same issue with my tj,
It would start then die instantly then it would crank but not fire until i turned the ignition off and on again then it would start fine. Turned out to be the ignition ring that regognises the key and allows it to start, a few people on here have had the same issue and the fix is to trace the two wires from the ring and where they connect into the loom you need to cut the connectors out and solder the wires (something about dodgy connectors causing it). Taking the ring out and joining the wires together doesnt work either lol! been there tried that
This worked for me so good luck!
