View Full Version : Rear glass seal and high mount light
Hi all,
I searched and searched but i think there is something wrong with the indexes on this site since it went down last week, only getting stuff from 2007!
Basically, the surround on the rear windows is completely shagged now and I need to replace it. I am also looking for a TL+ rear glass as it has the cut-out for the high mount brake light.
1) How have others gone about getting new glass fitted? bearing in mind there is a distinct lack of late model 3rd gens at the wreckers.
2) I have the high mount brake light that I found a while ago but failed to get the clips! Does anyone know the part numbers of the clips from Mitsubishi?

Unless you get the TW rear window, the seal is part of the glass, is bonded to the glass
The high mount light was on all from TH onwards unless a VRX etc as they have the big wing.

I'm with Dave on this one - I need those clips.... after my rear windscreen was replaced the fella that put the new screen in chucked out the old broken one with the clips still on it....now i'm driving around with no brake light as I can't seem to find the clips.....from what i've heard its illegal to drive around without a 3rd brake light....
The best way to remove a windscreen is by using a tool like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TRADESMEN-QUALITY-Windscreen-Removal-Tool-/220684592534?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3361d3a596#ht_1742wt_1139)...I bought it from supershit auto for $40 and it cuts through the seal....pretty much a bent blade with a string attached to it....we used it to remove a replacement windscreen off a wreck...best advise I can give when using it is to choose a hot day to remove the screen and use some good heavy duty gloves....also be careful and push down on the blade not just rip it towards you because it'll crack the screen if it goes the wrong way

Dave,
There is one TL sedan at Blacktown Pick-n-Payless, it had the rear screen in it about a week or so ago. It's painted white, and in about row 2 or 3 back from the central "road". I never realised that TL had different rear window seals compared to my deteriorating TJ and KJ.

If the glass is still in good condition, you don't need to remove it to get the seal out. It is applied to the edge of the screen in the factory before the screen is glued in, so it is held in place by a lip and the adhesive. You can just pull it out, and put in a new one. A new one won't fit because of the lip, but you can trim that off and glue the new strip in place with some silicone (try to use non acidic silicone). I did this quite successfully with the trim on a TS wagon, which uses the same method.
If you visit the pros they can use an electric cutter - looks like an electric carving knife with a long blade - to cut the screen out and replace the trim, then glue it back in. You will need to supply the trim. Also, if you want to, they could put in a TJ screen for you. Don't bother with a second hand screen from the wreckers, as they are impossible to get out in one piece without the right tools.
My TJ has perished trim on the rear screen as well, but a smear of black silastic will fix that. lol
Brake light - is it possible to glue it on?
Nrma want $360 for new rear glass fitted, and comes with the high mount brake light clips too.
Thoughts??

Its the average price the big guys usually charge......at least it'll be new and convenient - thing is with second hand is that unless you have a UV light you might not see the nicks/scratches that an rwc inspector (you guys have to get your car rwc-ed every year yeah?) will find.....plus if you're not careful you could end up breaking the glass - i.e. installer will not guarantee that if they break the glass they will cover it .....
If you've got the money then $360 isn't bad...although I think you can do better....try calling around private installers who run thier own business'....they're usually considerably cheaper and can do as good job as the big guys ..... I got quoted $280 from O'brien to install a windscreen I would provide, and when I searched around I managed to find a guy who would do it for $80! ... bit of time and you can save some good money ;) ..... in the end for me I ended up getting the screens installed a friend of the spray painter for $100 for the front and the back....

When I had a crack in my windscreen, I paid the $50 for windscreen cover in my insurance.
Week after, I called my insurance to replace it - $50 windscreen!
