i was trying to adjust my throttle position sensor and after trying to get a voltage reading on it it seemed to be fluctuating between 0.05 and 1.7 volts since it wasnt staying still i just unpluged it

so can someone tell me what will actually happen without the throttle position sensor pluged in what does it actually control cause everything seems the same with it unpluged and also does anyone know why it would be fluctuating like that?
hope this makes sense

it should be a steady reading of 0.5 volts
approx at the middle of the adjustment slots

if not replace the unit

it did make a difference unlugging it all the shift patterns where bad i checked it with a good multi metre and it was 4.5volts not 0.04 volts so definetly a problem

let us know how you went with this.
these types of instances are very annoying when trying to chase the cause of a problem.
cheers

yeah your trans rely's on the TPS to know where the throttle is so it can change gear's...
grab another unit from the wreckers - late model 2nd gen v6 one *should* be the same just check for corrosion on the plugs. If not I'd give your local auto elec a call.

i was probing the wrong terminal my tps is fine ive set it to .5 but when i start the car at idle its at .54 so i wonder if i should back it of or just leave it at .5 with the ignition on and engine off
