The problem is the clear cote, UV rays & contaminants destroy it. So what you actually see is clear cote peeling off, first sign is that it looses gloss & then eventually peels of. Using cutting compound is too late at this stage, hate to tell you but the only way is to sand back & repaint the roof. If you car is keept outside it will happen eventually, i for example wash my car every week & put paint protector regularly but still after 10 years i can see couple tiny spots stating appear on the roof (im talking 1-2mm). If you want to save some money on respray, sand back entire roof with 400 grid you dont need to get to bare metal just get clear off, take windscreen & rear window trims out, & the door trim (the top one only, that runs along the roof).
Also problem is it hard to stop it once it starts, get 1800 grid paper & sand at the edge of the spot, be careful not to take off too much, then you will need to cut with cutting compound, meduim cut #7 lby mcguires will do, then apply apint protector NUfinish one will do (great value for money) or if wonna get something more expensive then autoglym

some colours are more prone than others too.
Black, Red, Silver and green seem to get it worst
White and blue seem to not be too bad.

Not sure about magnas paint but isnt "most" red and white cars a mixture of clear and color?

Yea all new non metallic colours use solid paint, ie no clear is applied, so you wont get this flaking effect, not to mention new 2 pack paints are much more durable.

Get the car resprayed in a solid, ie non-metallic colour. You will never have the flakey clear coat problem again. lol

Mine is in having the roof resprayed as we speak. It started as some tiny spots on the back of the roof, and has progressed to a hand size spot in a few months

Whoooooooot??? Lots of new cars come in solid colours! Don't gimme that "soooooo 1980's" crap! All those first and second gen owners who opted for a solid colour when they ordered their new cars laugh every time they see one with clear coat peeling!
Woos! Learn to do your own resprays, tuffy! lol

Yep! Starts on the roof, at the back and in the middle, or at the front of the roof. Then the bonnet, upper surfaces of the body, boot, and front guards. Nothing stops it!
Be prepared for repeat visits to the spray shop!
Green is the worst for fading. This was the roof of a TJ after 9 years in the WA sun.

Hey mate, I just got my car back yesterday from the painter, it had the same problem, I had the boot, bonnet and roof all peeling at the clearcoat, so i had them resprayed and i got my grill painted green (was silver) to match the car and i got a spoiler i bought painted so i can instal it, it costed $670 to do all that. Your better of with a respray

Im sorry but that roof is just bad for a TJ, whoever took care of it did a very very poor job, sun alone will not cause this, have a look at my photo laso a TJ & nearly 10 years in the sun. I can see hail damage on the roof so its obvious this car was not polished & washed as a non damaged car would. About every 4 months i will spend about 4-5 hours polishing & hand carwash every week

I have a 98 TF in Nautilus Blue. The dark metallic blue. The roof is ****ed. Absolutely well and truely.
What do people think of the idea of nautilus blue metallic painted as a 2 pack paint as opposed to enamel? Theoretically It should prevent it happening ever again. Either way, im up for a full closed door respray.

Paint destruction happened long before the hail damage. Notice the different colours in the pics? That has a lot to do with it! lol Anyway, the roof is now straight and flame red.

In the 12 years that your car was painted, paint technology has improved a lot. Whatever paint type you put on it now doesn't really matter, its the quality of the clear coat used. Go with whatever paint the painter recommends.
