Why 6x9's? Not wanting to run a sub?

Why buy online? Visit some of the Northern Suburb audio store's, Ang's is a good one to get some quality gear from.

yeah not really after a sub. Just want better audio quality then stock. The Altera LS audio is getting a bit old (6 cd stacker, 6x9s, components and tweeters), so im looking to get something that supports MP3s and is a bit sharper/clearer to the ears

Hey!
Just change the front speakers to splits, and use an AMP
Forget about the 6x9's if you do get them just low pass them and use them for bass only.

Well in this instance i would still suggest taking a trip to a Local SA car audio business, as i along with alot of other guys over on MEA are trying to get Car Audio back off the ground, so i believe in supporting your locals.

Also this way you can get some solid advice and a chance to listen to the speaker before you buy.

I had a soundstream amp and Digital Designs sub combination in my old commodore. Its nice and all for shows, but for what i wants (sharper, crisper sound and a bit more kick then stock), a sub isnt really needed. Plus i like my boot room.

Definitely listen to stuff before you buy if you can. Also, at the price you are getting those splits for, I'd be looking at something like the Vibe Black Air 6's or something along those lines.

I have to agree with TimmyB here.

Also the old Soundstream amps were pretty good but im not to sure about the modern stuff.

i used to use a Soundstream LW2.260 Lil Wonder with a DD512, and it was rock solid. Soundstream amps still have a reputation of underrating their power outputs.

For the $ you're considering on the Pioneer components, why not check out the Boston S-60s - avail from Ryda. Or Polk Audio DB6501 or MM series components. Tonkins stock the latter. Both very highly regarded.

Yes the lil wonders did have a good reputation, they may still underrate their powers but im not too sure about the quality.

Why not run the rear speakers off the headunit?
I've been convinced that the rear speakers are just for a bit of fill, not to actually compete with the front speakers.
And that will bring the price under $2k :) hehe.

P.S. 0GA wiring is overkill. I've used 8GA (~250W RMS amp), but I'd recommend 4GA in case you wanted to get more serious later, but 0GA would just be harder to route (less flexible) and not provide any benefit. (unless you wanted to get seriously serious)

The reason i want to amp the rear speakers is because i once ran soundstream 3 way coax's directly off a head unit, and they would distort at higher volume. I dont want to spend all this money, or to find out im still hearing distortion from behind me

I used to be just like you insisting on not needing a sub, looking for a clear, clean setup. Let's just say that didn't last. You won't either.

Personal opinion, don't waste your money on a 4 channel amp and exxy rear speakers. Get yourself a good quality 2 channel amp (Say a JL 300/2V2, $500ish), and some good components for your front stage, then spend the rest on building up your front doors with good baffles and plenty of sound deadening, make the door a good solid box for your speakers. Some basic 6x9's faded out off HU power for rear fill is sufficient in the rear.

On a $2k budget, you're looking at $700ish for the headunit you want, $500ish for an amp like say the JL mentioned, $500-600 for a good pair of speakers (you'll need to decide that based on what you like the sound of, but I'd be looking at brands like Focal, Digital Designs, Boston etc, not Pioneer/Kenwood etc) which leaves you with $200-300 to prep the doors and get your wiring together, which is plenty. That'd be a damn sight better than some $300 pioneers for the front and rear and a lil-wonder-why-they're-still-making-these amplifier.

Food for thought.

There is some good advice on this thread. My personal opinion, 1)A double din touchscreen is a lot of dollars, not contributing to sound. Single Din with same sound quality, (don't ask me how you measeure this, but you understand what i mean), will be sig cheaper. Put you money in the front end of the car. This is where YOU sit, so a pile of money thrown at speakers in the back is IMHO a waste. Quality component speakers, a good 4 channel amp, and avoid the 6x9's. A small sub, will back fill the bass lost with car/road noise.

cheers

Ah a fader is a wonderful device :) Set the amped fronts to where you want them, then fade the rears to suit... or visa verser :)

Don't like either of those packages personally, head unit I like and the speakers are personal preference (although I think there's better for the money, even the local Soundstream demo car around here doesn't run Soundstream front splits :P), but the amps are shocking choices if you ask me. That being said, I'm yet to really see any of the advice given taken on-board, so why bother explaining right?
