Hey Guys,

My 2nd gen front right speaker is cracking loads and sounds like there is a frog in it haha:nuts:

What size speakers bolt or fit straight into 2nd gens without cutting and fitting them into the dash?
I know nothing about speakers to be 100% with you all..
I already have an after market cd player etc might wana replace my front speakers as 1 is cracking loads and sounds rubbish now..

Thanks guys

If you pull one out you will see they are very shallow. Finding replacements is a problem, but have you tried a Mitsu dealer? There might be some old stock about.

I just cut the wires, extended them and fed them through to the doors, then put speakers in the doors behind the map pocket. 6" speakers are a tight fit, something smaller will probably fit better.

There are some second gen models that had pod speakers in the doors, see if a local wrecker has some door cards with speakers. Grab the speakers and mounting plate as well, if available.

Another option is to look at 2nd gens at the wreckers and look for one with a dash mat. That seems to protect the speakers from being cooked by the sun, you never know your luck. lol

They are 4 inch speakers.

You can get any 4 inch speaker to fit, you just may need to cut away a little of the plastic strip that goes across the hole.

correct, however your wasting your time, get some KS door pods and stick in them in the doors. 4" speakers are just about useless unless your using them as a paperweight. 6"s are where its AT

Yes, there is a thin plastic strip that goes across the hole (i guess it was there to help with mounting the original speaker), a good stanley knife is all you need.

Depends on what you want in a car audio system, if you're amping them KS verada trims and 6" speakers are your best bet, but just off a normal headunit and if you're not too fussed with volume (4" speakers still do sound alright) then they will be alright.

I replaced my speakers in the 2nd gen with 3rd gen ones.
The 3rd gen uses the same speakers as the Mitsubishi GTO.
They sound good for stock speakers so go down to your local wreckers, grab a pair, toss them over the fence and collect them on the other side.
Jokes, just grab them and pay $10 and you're set :)

But if you can get 6" ones, then by all means, go!

As others have said, the dash speakers in 2nd Gen are 4" - but they are VERY shallow and that's where the world-of-pain comes in.

I looked for the most shallow after-market 4" I could find, which at the time were Pioneer I think. I looked at Wreckers, and most speaker were cooked to a powder worse that the ones in my niece's car. You'll also need to remove two mounting-holes - the stock speakers are mounted by two tabs only (lots of after-market have the speaker mounting holes so theycan easily be cut away).

It's very fiddly cutting away the plastic underneath the speaker hole - in my case it was more like cutting out a plastic panel, not just one strap. The angle of the windscreen severely restricts your ability to do what you want. I had cutters, files, hot soldering irons to melt through the plastic - like I said, it was a world-of-pain job.

If you are interested in rear speakers, the Wreckers may be most handy for a couple of blanking plates in the rear parcel shelf in some cars. The parcel shelf cut-out is shaped for 6x9's - BUT the oval runs front-to-back, not side to side. There are blanking plates screwed-in to reduce the 6x9-shaped hole to a round 6" or so. These are not all that common, only up-spec 2nd gens had speakers in the rear parcel shelf.

4inch speakers - these must have 2 mounting tabs on opposite sides (cut 2 off if there are 4), and cutting the plastic out from under the dash where they fit in. Should be easy to do if you have either the dash or the windscreen out, otherwise some work with a stanley knife, soldering iron, bent hacksaw blades with electrical tape handles, or a mixture of all 3 is needed. If you can find an allen key shaped phillips head screwdriver or use one of those little hex screwdriver inserts from the changeable tip screwdrivers with a spanner that fits it to help do up the screw where you cant fit a screwdriver in because of the windscreen. 4inch speakers arent very good, mine are only plugged in because I can and I had a channel free up the front. I cant notice a difference over the rest of them.

6inch speakers - in verada door pods, see above

If you are going to cut holes in the door trim to fit them, see if you can fit 6by9s instead. I didnt put the map pockets back over the speakers I put in (only 6's)
