View Full Version : TE Magna Bogs down and nearly stalls, on wide open throttle, in park

Just finished changing the engine over tonight in my TE altera. The car is on gas, and i changed the engine with one with black rocker covers from a TF i think (has LPG stamped in the heads so it must have been from a factory gas model, dont know if that makes a difference). Didnt have much time to do anything else on it tonight because its getting dark and pouring with rain!
Basically after i changed the engine, turned it over and it started no problems, and idels fine. If i open the throttle slowly its fine and revs smoothly through the rev range. The problem is if i accelerate hard, it just loses idle and nearly stalls, doesnt rev up at all. This is while in park or neutral, but it feels the same in drive and reverse going up and down the driveway.
As i said havent really had time, to diagnose, but i thought i would ask the question as someone might have had this problem before, and it would save me heaps of time!!
Ill keep you posted on the progress, but any help would be great. Thanks guys!

does it play up on both fuels?
did you reconnect the airflow meter?

yeah its the same on gas and petrol so that pretty much rules out a fuel problem.
airfolw is connected, first thing i checked.
Havent had much time today but will get working on it again monday

was it a complete engine swap or just the mechanicals? thought train is perhaps a coil/crank or cam angle sensor problem on donor motor
last time i saw these exact symptoms tho it was a broken cat that would block up under load

complete engine swap except dizzy. dont think its crank sensort because the car starts and if i disconnect it, the car doesnt start. i havent checked that cat yet. The problem is i bought the car with a seized engine that had been sitting around for quite a while, so i dont really know if there were any other faults with it!
im pretty stumped because if i floor the accelerator, the engine just basically stops firing cuts out and dies after about 5 seconds. but if i nurse the accelerator, it will rev right up without problems. Ive dealt with some crazy problems, but this ones really got me stumped!

yeah i'm very suspicious of the cat... failing that how old is the fuel in the tank and is the fuel pressure/flow ok

ok i checked the cat this morning, its fine, and i was thinking fuel pressure but it does it the same on lpg so it couldnt be.
Im going to get a second hand dizzy today, im thinking it migth be buggered internally.
It just perfectly cuts out as soon as you put your foot down hard, doesnt even rev up at all so im thinking it must be electrical.

problem all sorted. Went down to the wreckers, picked up a dizzy for $25 and now the engine is running perrrrfect! Must have been the internals of the dizzy, because i tried my old cap and rotor on the new dizzy i picked up and it worked fine aswell.
Hope this helps someone in the future!
Did you have this problem on the old motor to any degree?
The motor that you swapped? Is it a 3.5?
If so, the 3.0 dizzy is different from the 3.5 one

i bought the car with a seized engine so i dont know what it was like before.
motors were both 3.0.
Bit of moisture while it wasnt running must have got into the dizzy and caused it to play up.
All sorted now tho,
Just jumped into the GTO and found out that the tacho has stopped working!! do the problems ever end??? Thats going to be another pain to sort out

That's a half easy one to diagnose. You have your igniter module located on the front of the head (bottom LHS of rocker cover) which has the tacho output there. Make sure the wiring is good to the plug, and if not, swap the igniter for a known working one. Other then that, could be a faulty tacho itself, but I'd start looking at the source of the signal first rather then the output.

yeah i had a fiddle with the wires to the igniter cleaned them out, but that made no difference. ill have to source a spare igniter. i might need some other help with that soon! thanks for that!
