My TJII AWD has a squeaking rear suspension. It's most noticeable up to about 60km/h. I can't isolate the squeak/s to any particular part of the suspension. The car has done 190K and I suspect the bushes may have passed their use-by date. Does anyone else have this problem and/or have any suggestions as to what might be the cause?

Dry and age hardened rubber will squeak. Put some spray lubricant on them, like WD40, one set at a time - eg shock bushes first - until you locate the squeaking ones, then replace those. On some cars (non Magna) the top of the rear shock mounts can collapse the rubber and you get metal rubbing on metal. Worth a look.
Can you get it to squeak with the car stationary by bouncing the rear end up and down? If it only happens while moving, it might be dragging brake shoes. When moving and you get the squeak, apply the hand brake briefly and gently and see if that changes it. If it gets worse or goes away you know its the shoes.

Thanks. It does squeak when I bounce the car up and down when stationary. I'll give the spray lubricant a try.

Don't just spray the whole lot as you won't know which were squeaking.

Dont just spray them pull it down and clean the joints too, I had big problems with mine last week and spraying them got rid of it for a short while then it would come back, I pulled them apart and cleaned then lubed and now it's perfect :)

Also check the bolts where the bushes are mounted, these often come, well not loose as such but the steel bushing can start to move in the mount position causing a squeak

What did you lube them with? Did you use WD40 or rubber grease or something else?

Spraying them is only a temp fix, but it helps to locate the source of the noise. Then its time to strip and lubricate. With what though, good question.

I use copper grease, works a treat on my suspension bushes to get rid of squeaks, and won't harm rubber or polyurethane.
