Hey guys i have been having some long term issues with my handbrake and would like some suggestions.

First of all i used my TE to tow a large trailer and then the day after i tried parking on my steep drive way, one of the handbrake cables snapped.

I then had it replaced and all was good until a sqeauling noise came about from the rear of the car. I had it looked at by my mechanic and they said the old handbrake cable was re adjusting itself and causing it to rub on something or other. So they replaced the other handbrake cable and re adjusted both sides.

All was good for a few days until it came back so the mechanics had a good look into the problem and suggested that the adjusting nut (or somethign along those lines) wasnt holding properly and if the car moved back slightly when the handbrake was on it would re adjust itself.

SO. The mechanics used loctite on the thread/nut and said it should be good, but today at very low speeds the noise has come back.

Anyone have any idea, or had this issue before?

My car used to squeal occasionally going around corners at low speeds, and also used to smell like brakes after a long drive.

I found that reversing and pulling the handbrake up until you hear a bit of a thump usually stopped it.

It's not a fix but it should stop the annoying noise until you do get it fixed.

I feel for you, been suffering the same for about 6 months ever since the mech adjusted the handbrake. It's only now just gone with new brake pads on (the old ones had plenty of wear, just didn't like them). You can ease the hb off a bit via the adjuster nut - no biggy.

If i get them to back it off anymore the car wont stay on my drive way for long.

Mine seems to make a very quiet (but still quite annoying) squeak after my handbrake has had a reverse load applied.. example, handbraked applied on an upward slope. I find that a slight application of the handbrake in forward motion shuts it up first time, every time!
I figure it's got to do with the drum style of handbrake the magna's have..

FWIW, the handbrake on my 07/04 TL with 107KM is the best I've experienced in 50 odd years of driving. It will hold firm one or two notches before the HB is fully applied, doesn't drag, excellent for up or down hill parking so I cannot complain. The service records indicate the rear discs have never been removed or the handbrake ever adjusted. Maybe I've been lucky so far.
