Hi all....I just bought a 2000 Mitsubishi Magna TJ. As I don't have a manual, I am not able to figure out all the features. Like what does the lock near the ignition key does?.... A security led also flashes on my stereo..what is that used for?How is the engine immobilizer enabled. Also my remote is not locking is not working, I tried changing the battery in the remote but to no avail. As you can see I do not have much knowledge about cars. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

welcome to the forum..
for the lock near the ignition key... perhaps the car is fitted with an aftermarket security system... maybe a picture would help
engine immobilizer includes a chip in the key head that communicates with the engine management system
stereo led is to point out to would be thieves that the radio is security coded
remotes can suffer from broken solder joints on the battery holder... but you problem may be a coding issue... plenty of threads on this

Replaced battery and then recoded the remote with the car?
Does unlocking work ?
What do you mean by the lock near the ignition key? Are you talking about the position marked "Lock" when you turn the car off and remove the Key? If so this is the column lock which you'll discover if you turned the steering wheel as it will lock in position.(key out)
The immobiliser is all part of a Body Electronics Module and communicates or recognises your key. If someone tries the start the car and does not have the original key the car will not start. Built in feature!
I'm not sure about the LED but the stereos are security protected with a PIN. Remove power and the RADIO will request a 4 digit code.
Oh, and download this if you like playing with cars. http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3

Not the most robust item, I had problems with what appeared to be an oily resin coming out of the button pad and the micro switches were sticking. May be you have a stuck button too. I used a cotton swab and metho to help clean it up. I've also had to resolder the battery holder a couple of times now.

The remote takes a cr2032 battery if you need a new one. $5 for 5 off eBay, or $5 each from your local chemist. lol
If the battery in the car has been disconnected for a while, the remote may not work, and need recoding to the car. Easy enough, you turn the ignition from ACC to ON and back to ACC 3 times, and the indicator lights in the dash will flash. You then press any key on the remote. It should work then.
I cleaned out my TJ remote, put a new battery in it, coded it, tested it and put it away. I don't want a big lump on my key ring or my pocket. Key by itself will do fine. lol
