View Full Version : TJ squeak new brakes
Hi All, I have changed all 4 the brake pads and its has been 5000 KM, but it is still squeaking as it can be heard on low speed. Any suggestions how to fix this issue?

did you machine the rotors flat before putting new pads in? without machining the rotors, you'll get sub-standard braking and pad life, along with brake squeal.

The pads are probably rubbing lightly on the discs at low speed and moving about in the calipers. Did you re-install the shims that were on the original pads? New pads don't come with them and some people leave them off.

Yes ill admit when i changed my pads i didnt put the shims back on and iv had niose ever since, just waiting for them to wear out so i can get another set that hopefully come with shims!

Sorry! New pads NEVER come with shims. I don't believe Mitsu dealers have them either, but it would be worth a phone call. A help-yourself-wrecker might be the best go. Madmagna may have some too. One car I bought years ago had the shims missing on the front pads and the previous owner had silasticed the pads down in desperation. lol Always reuse the shims, ok? lol
Yes, I use a piston cruncher and have installed the two steel plates (one solid and one grooved) for the front wheels but the back ones were missing.

Clean up all the parts, get some PBR anti squeal, is like a thick orange paint that you put on the back of the pad, then you should be fine

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but this may be a little better than starting a new one...I'm not exactly sure if I have the shims on mine, I'll ask me mechanic when I go. Suffer from break squeal myself and on almost every brake. Mind you the rotors and pads were changed about 12 months ago :S I thought they would've lasted a bit could be wrong. After a quick google search I see that shims can break or crack? And they sit between the pads and the rotors? and Optional? :S
I have tried the anti squeal but it lasted less than week. Not sure which one the mechanic used though...he just said anti squeal. Tried another mechanic and all he said was crappy brakes, pretty sure they were bendix though. Might get a third opinion

I use CRC De-Squeak, works a treat.
See here: http://www.crcind.com.au/catalogue.nsf/web_brands/De-Squeak?openDocument
You can get it at most Supercheap, Repco, Autobarn etc stores.
When I fitted QFM HPX front pads a few months ago they started squeaking after a couple of weeks.
I got some CRC De-Squeak, followed the instructions (spray it on both sides of your rotors then burnish it onto the rotors by giving the brakes some stick and getting them nice & hot) and the squeak went away.
But the squeak came back worse than ever two days later.
I then realised where I had gone wrong, I hadn't properly burnished the De-Squeak onto the rotors coz I didn't get the rotors hot enough.
Tried again, but this time I really gave the brakes a workout, 20 or so consecutive hard brakes from 60km/h to 10km/h to get them nice & hot. Made me a bit sea sick!
That was about three months ago, never had the slightest hint of squeak ever since.

Alright, I'm thinking of putting new brakes pads and machining the rotors and since Its compatible with new pads, I'll what some anti squeal on there and heat the rotors with your guidelines and see how that goes. Hopefully the don't squeal for a while! Cant have such a fine piece of machinery turning heads on every stop....for the wrong reasons lol
