ive noticed (most particular when cold) a slight wurring sound when the car is not in gear and the clutch is out. put foot on clutch and it goes away, im guessing its some sort of bearing to do with the clutch. its not too noisy so i may just leave it untill my clutch needs a replacement.

That's a gearbox bearing. Check the oil level in it, if that is ok just ignore it. Manual boxes can get noisy as they age. If it annoys you too much, try a different gearbox oil, like Castrol VMX 80.

she is due for a gearbox oil change, is there a way to change it when doing a clutch without pulling it apart?

What, change the oil or the bearing?

Bearing needs the gearbox pulling apart, then you probably will replace all of the bearings because the noisy one will be hard to find. Check the price of a bearing set for your gearbox first.
Oil is simply drained through the drain plug and filled through the fill plug.
It might just be the throwout clutch bearing, change the oil first, then change the clutch if the noise doesn't go away with the oil change .

i was refering to the bearing. hope its a clutch bearing that i can change when i do the clutch

It could be your throwout bearing. Did you replace it with a new one when you did the conversion?

if its a 3ltr box its most likley the imput shaft bearing, keep the oil up to it and turn the music louder, works for me, these manual boxes are rather strong mines been to hell and back and it was noisey since the day i got it

Yes, some boxes are like that. Other than checking the oil level is ok, there is nothing to worry about, if the box is not noisy when driving and changes gears smoothly. Some gearbox oils are better at quieting bearings than others, might be worthwhile experimenting with that.

Umm no it can not be, only can be that if your foot is on the clutch bud, when foot off = input shaft, foot on clutch = throw out. The bearing is free spining with no load when foot is off the clutch, the gearbox is stationary when foot on clutch and car is stationary

so prob a input bearing?

Throwout bearings can be spinning when the clutch is up - normally wouldn't be and shouldn't be - if the free play on the clutch is insufficient. They get noisy very quickly then. lol But then it would be noisy when the clutch is depressed too, so this is probably just a sloppy input shaft bearing allowing the shaft to flop about inside the box. lol Pretty harmless really.

Had this problem on a sigma box, pulled it apart and replaced the input shaft bearings. Big and expensive things. Fixed the problem. These days I wouldn't bother though. lol An oil change to something better would have shut it up. lol

I keep on mentioning an oil change, but the OP isn't listening. I think he is determined to change the clutch and rip the gearbox apart. lol HoHum.

lol i did say it is due for a oil change, and that might help with the nortorius notchy 2nd. but if the bearing is not hard to to, id change it as i can get bearings real cheap thru my dads work.

Fair enough. Do the oil change first. I fixed a notchy 2nd gear in a RWD car by changing the oil to VMX80, but there might be better oils around these days. Ran VMX80 in a 2.6 manual, at 220,000 km the box was quiet and changed real smooth.

Removing the gearbox from a Magna, stripping it down, and replacing bearings and putting it all back together properly is far from an easy job. I would say it is a time consuming, difficult job. But go for it, if you are keen.

You might still get a shock when you see the price on the bearings. lol

I tried new oil and different oil for the notchy 2nd gear - better but not much improvement, esp at cold in my case.
Tried the Nulon gearbox additive in a toothpaste-style tube, and its helped heaps - still notchy when dead cold but far far better as soon as I've driven half a mile or so.
Just sayin'....

Yeppers, I wouldn't even consider a gearbox strip until the oil has been changed to something good. It has probably been low on oil for years anyway. lol
