Greetings All.
YAY! Damien just finished helping me install my headunit today! And my, what a nice install I must say! Im thrilled with the results, the sound system even sounds GREAT with the stock speakers! I cant wait to sound deaden the doors, and get some aftermarket speakers.
My H/U is a Pioneer DEHP4650MP. Will post some day/night shots of it!
Now to the sound deadening. :doubt:

Yes, big thanks to Manual for confirming my suspicions. We ground to the chassis, which raises the question, where the hell does the factory HU get its ground from? Anyways, as it turns out, on Tonba's TF Advance the Black/Yellow wire and the Green/White wire are both for the illumination circuit, and it's the same on mine as well, so there you go, that's where I went wrong.
This is the first time I've heard a Pioneer deck in a Magna, and damn, it sounds so f'n awesome, even with just the stock speakers! Plenty of low end, and adequate high end. Can't wait to hear it when Alex (Tonba) gets new speakers. It's an awesome deck too! Plenty of features, has such an awesome Parametric EQ and general sound shaping section. Has certainly encouraged me to get my act together and finish off my own install.
Must apologise to Alex for my stuff ups, but we both learnt some valuable lessons this week, hehe. After doing so many installs on various other cars, it was the humble Magna that had me stumped. Oh, and I have finally overcome my fear of car batteries! Thanks Alex. lol

The stock HU gets earth from the frame that it sits in. The external metal shell of most headunits is earth, the Pioneer unit would have worked without connecting the ground wire too, but it is always best to connect it to a "better" earth through the black ground wire.

Well every other car I've done an install on has had a ground wire as part of the factory HU wiring harness, so it was a surprise to not have one. Never mind, it's fixed.

When i have pulled the stock H/U out of magnas before - the only thing it is bolted to is plastic - so i have no idea how it is meant to earth??
But yeah - run an earth to a solid metal contact and you should see a good connection no problems
Good to hear I could help - and even better to hear you are happy with it!!

I have a 4650MP too - awesome sound. You made an excellent purchase. I also installed Alpine tweeters into teh dashboard for better high range. Sweet!

When i have pulled the stock H/U out of magnas before - the only thing it is bolted to is plastic - so i have no idea how it is meant to earth??My thoughts exactly, not to mention that the metal bracket that the radio screws into doesn't exactly make a nice strong connection with the chassis of the car, in fact I don't even think it does come into contact with any other metal.
Speaking of bolting to plastic, perhaps you could give us a rundown of how you secure the mounting bracket to the stereo mount in the car? We had to improvise with some cable ties, which will more than do the job, but was wondering if you usually drill extra holes or some other trick? We decided to use the bracket after reading Blake's post about giving the HU a much more flush position, worked a treat.

If you are talking about how the attach the cage to the car - basically - you slide the cage into teh area that you will put the H/U and then fold down the metal tabs so they sit flush against the the back of the console - that way you can't pull it forward - this then means when you put the H/U into the cage - and it locks in place - you can't pull the whole H/U and cage outs *in order the steal it* if you fold down like - two on top, two on bottom, and then i generally do one from each side as well - you will be suprised at how strongly this will hold the H/U in place. I tend not to actually *Bolt* the H/U into a car

Ah, right, of course. Well the bracket sure isn't going anywhere, I made sure of that (God, I love cable ties - so many possibilities). That's a handy hint, thanks Manual.

I don't know if some of the stock H/Us ground through the aerial ground wire. I think that is pretty poor, but means they only have to plug it in and it is grounded.

Tonba,
You have graphic editing software on your PC. Use MS Paint - Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint
Once in the program, open the file using the File > Open command. Then use the Image > Stretch/Skew and change the image size by 50% in both vertical and horizontal. Then, choose File > Save As, and save it as a new filename using type JPEG. The file will shrink dramatically in file size.
If you have Microsoft Office on your PC, you will also have Microsoft Photo Editor, which does the above much better. Look under Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Photo Editor. Then once your image is opened, Choose the Image > Resize option, then File > Save As, and choose the advanced options that allow you to change the JPEG compression. Set that at 50%, and save the file, you will notice it gets heaps smaller. If it then ends up below 70K, you can post it up.
I also usually crop my pics to show the detail required, that makes the image smaller again.
Best of luck.
