View Full Version : Retrofitting a projector

I think im about to ruin a pair of parras but im committed to proceed & actually purchased a spare set in case I stuff it up. Anyhow I bought a pair if projectors that are made to be retrofitted. I just have few questions:
• How long do you leave headlight in the oven in order to open it?
• Do you cut the hole in the reflector to suit the projector?
• Do you glue it on or perhaps use a screw?
• What sealant should I use to reseal the lens or do I just stick it back in the oven & wait for glue to remelt again?
I know few people done angel eyes so hopefully someone can answer those.
Guys just to be clear this is not a question if this is legal, or if there any benefit whatsoever of doing what im about to do or putting in better globes will give the same effect or that projectors suck.
I already made up my mind so i just need some assistance from anyone with experience.

make sure you get it engineered.
or it could open yourself up for alot of issues in an accident.

Re: Hair Dryer
Yes it will work. I used one to open mine when I fitted angel eyes.
1 piece or 2 piece parras? The 2 piece ones have a glass front that wont deform in the oven. Ive done lights/indicators for a 2nd gen and indicators for a 3rd gen in the oven, use a heat gun if you can or at least to pre-heat the area where the glue is as the plastic deforms when its hot. I think it was 3-5 mins for indicators, one at a time, forgot the temp. Headlights took a little longer. The glue strings worse than pizza cheese and is a pain to get off if you get it on the lense or reflector or anywhere you might see in the light. 2 people might help, one to seperte the pieces and one to grab all the strings. Gloves is highly reccomended.
ah, they're the same set of projectors i was about to purchase earlier this year to do the same mod. you can use the oven, as long as you've got the heat set low- but high enough to have the glue get soft and tacky.
i'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see your progress

Mkay! Projectors finally came in. They are designed to be mounted without any glue or drilling holes in the reflectors, instructions say to take out the existing globe & all holding brackets, insert projector from the "outside", its got a threaded end that goes through the hole (where the globes used to be), & then tightened with the washer & wing nut on the other side. To be honest im not sure how this will work as the projector is quite large & will cause a lot of stress on the headlight if fixed like that. I might have to come up with something to make additional support for this to work.
These also come with a controller that must be wired up if you want high beam function of the projector. It makes reflectors inside the projector to slide out slightly to give you high beam illumination. Also it can be used to switch on angle eyes/halo rings which come with the projector, BUT im not going to use em. (not a fan)
Ill start this weekend. Will keep this updated.

This is gonna look good.
Though, I am at a loss as you can get projectors with built in angel eyes for the lancers in a complete plug and play headlight, hell, can even get them for my wife's yaris for under $400 pair, and the design for both magna and lancer is similar.

I heated my para's in the oven when I had to open them up.
Pre-heat oven to 150c for 15min. Then turn the oven OFF. Put the para's inside and let them sit in the residual heat for 10-15min.
You don't want the oven on when you do this or you risk burning them, especially if it's gas!
Wear gloves when removing them then start working fast, they'll cool down quick. I used an old butter knife to split them. It took me two goes in the oven per headlight to get them apart.
The original glue was sufficient to reassemble. Just heat them up again first so the glues hot and sticky :)

Sound pretty good! Can't wait too see the results! It;s a hard job, but i recon it will work! A small tip: i used silicone to seal the headlight back when i put my angel lights in, and they are not foggy.
Good luck!

Okay its finished!!!
I opened up the headlight Left in the oven for 10 minutes at 150c, glue melted & it was pretty easy.

Projector went in really easy, its designed to fit in to H7 socket without any damage to the headlight, it has threaded end that goes right thought where the globe was that tightened on the other side with wing nut & that’s it!
A problem.... Projector is too long, at certain adjustment it will hit the plastic lens cover, so to give yourself more room when calibrating it you will need to cut the reflector in order to move it further inside the headlights
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af244/e363ma78/Reflector.jpg
Make sure to use smaller screw after this, since you have cut the top of & the bottom predrilled section is narrower. Use grinder, really easy.
Put reflector back in

Reinstall headlights

Before (blue 12,000k HID in normal parras), after white (6,000k HID projector), i didn’t have time to adjust them properly. I know 6,000k will give better illumination then 12,000k unfortunately projector came with 6,000k

Looking good any chance of some pics against a wall so we can see how sharp the cut off is?

Great, would be even easier to do this in a TL/TW headlight as theres a tonne of clearance.

How'd you go with those pics?

nice job
have you checked your light pattern? reason i ask is that it looks like the projectors are either made or set for a LHD market. the cut appears to flare out to the right hand side instead of the left.
if it is then hopefully it can be tweaked without having to strip the whole light down again.

Yea i fixed that up, it was just facing the wrong way, much better now
Heath Young has fitted projectors to a parra. Check out his post titled "Lights Discussion" from April 2008, specifically post #4 which has a photo.

Is it possible to put the projector on the inside light and swap the high beam to the outside, it seems a little unbalanced at first glance.

Im not sure if you can, if reflectors have the same mouning points then it will be possible. Since the photo i have adjusted them properly, they look much better now, once my car is finished with the sprintex setup ill post photos.
