Hi Guys,

My mums (soon to be mine) TR 2.6 auto has had a recent problem.
Yesterday i was chucking mainys and the battery light came on, didnt think much of it and kept driving. all good until tonight, had the stero on and all of a sudden the stero cut out. And gradely the lights started dimming and the car wasn't changing gears properly. Anyways i parked it at home and now it wont start. Any Ideas to why its doing what it is?

P.S if i reved it the light would go off for a second or two then come back on OR if i wriggled the little two pinned plug.

Cheers
Chris

Sounds like your alternator is dead/dieing, check voltage of car battery it should be 13~14 volts.

Also my auto electrican tested my alternator by hitting it with a hammer light came on lol

If the alternator is dieing it won't charge the battery, so that why your light went dim and unable to start the car :)

Chucking "Mainys"? What is that?

Battery light on = not charging.
Not starting = flat battery.

Brushes have worn down to their limit, pull the regulator off the alternator and solder in some new ones. Might work if the regulator and/or diodes haven't gone out in sympathy. Put the battery on a charger.

Mum was impressed, was she?

14.4 Volts. Bosch regulator puts this out, says so on the regulator. lol

Pretty Much pointless driving up and down the main street lol.

And mum doesn't know yet :/

Ahh i see, ill jumpstart it and see what the miltimeter says.

Out of curiosity does a 2nd gen v6 or a 3rd gen v6 one fit?

Cheers

Nope, different drive pulley, different mounting, different electrical connections. Brushes are only a couple of dollars, recon one $150, wreckers about $50.

The 2.6 Bosch alternator usually wears its brushes down to the limit at about 190-220 thousand km, if you get one from a self serve wreckers have a look at the speedo first. You may find one that is already a recon one, look for a sticker on it with some electrician's shop name on it.

I'm surprised the amount of people who have no idea what 'Mainys' are. Must be a mount gambier thing aye hahaha.
