Have you pushed the button on top of the gear lever? lol There might be something wrong with the lever's internals.

Some autos have a common problem, that after a while the button on the lever, the little edge type things will snap, so good news is, might only be a small problem costing ~$20 or so. Get a small screwdriver or moulding type tool, and out it down each side of the button, trying to push the button up and out, then see if it looks damaged/worn/distorted. Bad news is, if the car is on, and not going into drive, you will need a transmission reconstruction, usually costing around ~$2300 (thats just to do the transmission, not including the labour to get the box out and in). I hope its only the little plastic button for your sake!
There is a good exploded picture of the selector mechanism in the downloadable workshop manual - section 23a - it appears that the knob is removeable as LawlMagna explains. The problem should only be in the selector button not releasing to allow the selector to move thru the gate into reverse etc. Good Luck.

If you have an acomplice, might also be worth watching in the engine bay while someone moves the selector thru the range of motion - have a look at the linkages to transmission and the inhibitor switch (all of this is roughly underneath the air intake duct. You might be able to notice something is fouling the linkages (eg: dropped tool etc), and also see if you reckon the inhibitor switch is moving to full arc...... if it looks like inhibitor switch is only running thru part of its "arc" and there's no loose bolts or items jammed in the cable or linkages, then the selector mechanism in the car could be the culprit. Look also for damage to selector cable as in runs thru the engine bay.
Basically, its gotta be a problem in the cabin, in the engine bay, or in the transmission. Cross fingers that its something simple in the cabin or external to the transmission.
The online (PDF) Misti Workshop Manual is GOLD - look for www.lisho.net and follow the link about 380 Workshop Manual - it leads to a page with links for 2nd gen, 3rd gen and 380 Manuals.
