I am having trouble getting the thrust bearing back on. Should the two bracket thingys on the the bearing fit over the holes in the release lever or between them and then the clip goes through both?
Cause I can't get the brackets to fit either over or between them. The old one has the same problem so I don't think that's right. That's just cost me another $45 to keep the engine hoist another day.

Not sure if this will help but here's the diagram from the manual.

thanks but it doesn't help much, not for a magna TR. I have a manual but I can't work it out. The prongs on part 13 seem to fit up against the arm (18) but I can't work out how to fit the clip.

The diagram is for a third gen manual. I think Sarah_au is working on a 2.6 second gen manual.

EDIT: Confirmed, second gen. Second gen pictures below, totally different.

Don't just replace things, there are tricks to this job. Did you get a sheet of paper with the clutch kit that says something about shimming up the fulcrum?

The clips ("U" shaped with a bend at one end) fit through the holes and the bendy bit fits behind the lever.
so the prongs on the thrust bearing just sit up against the prongs on the arm? So are the holes in the bearing prongs just there to confuse the issue?
(I just had a breakdown I worked for it I deserved it so I had it)

I've updated my earlier post with pictures. As in second picture, the bend at the end of the "U" shaped clips fit into the release lever. (Or maybe the other way around, can't remember. I did this job in March of last year. lol Did you have a good look at how they came out?)

Sorry the pic isn't too good.
So what you are saying that the prongs on the bearing rest up against the prongs on the arm. The ends of the clip go through the prongs on the bearing and then over the arm?

Doesn't seem right in my head

Nope, the lever actually rests on the solid part of the thrust bearing, the clip is just there to keep the two together. The holes in the thrust bearing and lever should line up nicely for the clip to fit through on both sides.

Pull the trust bearing and release lever off the gearbox and work out how they clip together off the car. You will have to pull them off anyway for the next step . . . . . .

I have done that it is the new one I am trying to put on. No there were no instructions with the clutch kit. I do look at how things come off but it was dark and I couldn't see behind the thrust bearing. Thought it was a simple thing and it is really. Normally things only go on one way and won't fit unless they are right. What is throwing me is that the new bearing had the clip around it and the ends went through the holes but there is nothing to really sit the clip onto the bearing, no groove or anything. The prongs don't fit between or over the the prongs on the fork so I can't see why they are there. Stupid stupid design just like the rest of the layout of the car.

The two sides with the holes in them on the thrust bearing should fit on either side of the fingers of the release lever. When you push them together the holes should line up. Compare the new and old thrust bearings, they should have the same distance between the two sides with holes in them. If the spacing is different perhaps you have the wrong one? (I don't know if TR and TS clutches are different, mine is a TS)
Once the ends are engaged the clip just sits there, with the curve at the top. I'm assuming you have the single horseshoe shaped clip? The TS has two smaller clips as in the second picture from the manual.

Try to assemble the lever and OLD thrust bearing off the car so you can see how it fits together.

No I have the right one it is the same as the old one. I can't fit the old one back either.

I have given up for now.

The only good thing to come out of all this is that with all the getting up and down under the damn car my right leg has loosened up properly 2 years after I had the hip totally replaced. At least my doctor will be pleased tomorrow.

Well a rest always works doesn't it. I went back to it and it fitted first go right between the arms of the fork. I was so tired I didn't bother trying to move the fork sideways to make it fit in.
