Hi Guys,
just did a bit of research and work on this area so I would love to share it with you all so you can jump right to decision yes/no.
to clean MAF Air Flow sensor - you need to unscrew 2 quite rare screws - believe me I looked in every shop they had no idea about 5 point star with a little nipple pattern.
here you go - it takes about 2-3 weeks to get it from EvilBay $10 and spray $25 off the shelf from SuperCheap Auto.

So you have done it now by taking the sensor out? Have you noticed any improvements in power or economy? How long did it take ( not including ordering the "special tool")

to remove MAF sensor is about 5 min job. disconnect the wire first and then unscrew the two screws. then spray 4-5 times thru the metal parts you can see. i read and was advised "Do not touch any of the metallic parts" so i didnt. the spray comes with white extension. on the spray can is says 5-10kw on the wheel improvement and KM/L improvement. I have done it yday arvo - and about 4 weeks ago on my wife's corolla - the corolla had massive fuel improvement - she drove about 2,5 weeks on one tank + air con. I have noticed little better fuel since yesterday but will give it a go for at least 1 week of my usual driving routine.

I just found a flatblade screwdriver & jammed it in there bending the centre pin & off in a couple of minutes. Then use normal phillips screws to put it back on. No cost no special tools :)

I have just done the maf sensor using the appropriate cleaner but without taking it out, just spraying from the outside. I also extended my lower intake mod to make it alot bigger. I started the engine and the engine symbol came on !!!!WTF!!!??? Went for a drive and it all seemed ok. Checked all connections and no joy. Not happy Jan! any thoughts?

Maybe you should have left the MAF cleaner stuff dry before driving?

I was thinking of that mate but I was watching how quick it evaporated and thought that it may not be an issue. I will double check tomorrow morning otw to work to see if it is still playing up.

Please elaborate. have u dismantled the air hose afte the air box and sprayed thru? Like on the spray can? I have done it first time and no probs but as I did clean it in my wive's corolla I wanted to take it out and spray it thru. It evaporates quickly m

Yes I took the air box off all together and sprayed from both sides of the rear of the air box. I used the CRC MAF cleaner. The engine light was still on this morning when I went to work so I booked it in for a check up. Funnily enough when I finished work and hopped in the car to take it to Mr Mitsi the light had gone out. They found a lot of error messages which they cleared and then went for a drive (read rev test) and brought it back to see if it had re appeared. It hadn't. Go figure eh?

so it seems that the spraying was not an issue - did they explained what error msg where there - to what part was that related to? glad all is back to normal cheers

Doesn't appear to be. Good enough call though as that is the first thing Mr Mitsi asked me. It cranks fine all the time so far.

Just cleaned mine using CRC MAF sensor cleaner.
No need for a hard to find five point Torx screwdriver.
Simple process as follows:
Remove snorkel - child's play, two scrivets.
Loosen clamp holding air pipe to throttle body (just aft of the MAF sensor body) with a medium large Philips head screw driver, and pull pipe free.
Unclip wiring connector to MAF sensor (sits on top in between the two pesky Torx screws).
Remove airbox bolts - two 10mm bolts one at the back and one in front, but down a ways so you will need an extendar bar for your ratchet.
Airbox with MAF sensor housing attached to the rear of it should now lift up and clear.
Rotate airbox 90 degrees forward so the MAF sensor housing is uppermost.
Remove the four 10mm nuts holding MAF sensor housing to airbox.
MAF sensor housing now lifts clear (slightly fiddly bit on one corner which fouls a little on the MAF sensor wiring retaining clip, just need to wiggle it around a bit).
Now that you have completely removed the MAF sensor housing take it to your workbench, grap your can of MAF sensor cleaner and follow the directions!
Might as well clean or replace your air filter while you have the airbox out, easier that way. I replaced my K&N with a Ryco paper filter (Repco deal a few weeks ago - oil & oil filter & air filter going cheap, oil to be donated to a relative). Also cleaned out the inside of the airbox which was looking a bit dirty & oily.
Reverse everything to put it all back together.
Took me an hour but I'm a Klumzy Klutz who goes very slow & careful (I'm forever dropping things!), anyone who is even vaguely co-ordinated should be able to do it in 30 minutes.
KJ.

Notice any difference?

Notice any difference?
Haven't driven it since, so no!
It's been running well (goes like stink) for ages so I don't really expect to notice much if any difference.
But with all the reports of improvement after the MAF sensor is cleaned, it's now just clicked over 100,000k, and the niggly doubt that the K&N air filter oil might be fouling the MAF sensor just a little a bit (although I'm careful not to overoil the K&N) I thought what the hey, nothing to lose and maybe something to gain.
And I've been working on the car the last few days anyway (off work looking after the rug rats during school hols), got the timing belt replaced, flushed & renewed the brake fluid day before yesterday, and my order of Redline MT90 MTF should roll up any second now, so why not have a go at cleaning the MAF sensor?
Dropping said rug rats back to Bordertown tomorrow evening, will report back if I notice any difference in how the beast goes.

Is the MAF Air Flow Sensor cleaned by Mitsubishi as part of any of the scheduled services?

I doubt it.
Just went right through my service book and not a mention.
Maybe if the MUT 111 detected an error code that pointed at the MAF sensor they might check it out & clean it.

They wouldn't clean it unless they had to & if they are the dealer I go to, they would probably **** it up anyway lol ..... that's why I have my own MUTIII coming :D

Report after cleaning my MAF sensor.
As suspected, no change as far as I can tell.
I reckon it was already clean.
OT - been a busy week, fixed loose driver's side muffler, changed timing belt, EPG purge valve/solenoid, engine oil & filter, brake fluid, air filter & MTF (Redline MT90) plus MAF sensor cleaned.
Well the dealer did the timing belt but I did all the rest.
Nothing left to do for at least six months now, will be getting DIY withdrawal symptoms!

If anyone needs the screw driver bit they sell them at bunnings too. Well at least at the bunnings I work at lol cost about 8 bucks off the top of my head
edit: nevermind...... they were 6 point (wrong ones) lol on another note I did manage to clean my MAF and have noticed the car does feel to be a bit more responsive. I wouldnt say it made a major difference but it definitely was noticeable. Will have to wait a bit longer to see if I get any change in economy
