hi all.
when i turn my air con on the light comes on and compressor clutch engages with thermos but only when the fan is set the the very first speed. on all other fan speeds it does nothing. not even a light in the ac switch.
any ideas? im thinking there must be some problem with the fan speed controller.
thanks

yes the coil thing often goes
you know how to get to it to check if
the wire coils are broken ?
located near the fan motor remove the plastic panel under the glove box
the resitor has 2 screws holding it in place
a plastic plug in with a thick earth wire
the original resistor has 3 coil springs between each of the contacts
on mine the first and second speed always burnt out in summer
was quoted over $ 70 for a new one
i just soldered a new wire onto the contacts

Yep, a common problem. The fan setting go through a series of resistors, when they burn out it is as if you have switched the fan off and the A/C turns off. I bet fan setting 4 works, because that is a straight through electrical connection.
The resistor bit is easy to find and remove, if you find the fan housing under the dash it is a square bit on the front. Remove it and you will see the resistors - just coils of wire. Fix or replace and all should be back to normal.
IIRC fan setting 1 has its own coil, 2 has a coil and 3 uses the coil from 2 plus an extra one (or the other way around) , four bypasses all the coils and runs the fan motor at full speed. I thought of experimenting with large 10 Watt ceramic resistors in place of the coils, but ended up just soldering the break together. (Info from TP)
Yeah i had this too in my TN. It must be common because i grabbed one form one of those u-pull-it wreckers and when i went up to buy it the guy looks at me and says "let me guess. Your air-con isnt working"

Yep, not one of Mitsu's great design accomplishments. lol

thanks everyone.
after i fix the miserable pile of ef falcon shit thats parked next to the magna ill look into it. shame the magna rego has lapsed for now because with the ef off the road its really needed big time.
the one problem with the resistor idea is the fan still works perfectly on all speeds just the ac only works on low. ill check it anyway. otherwise im thinking maybe something to do with the linear switch (mines a SE so i get steering collum controls...YAY!...80's luxury). otherwise ill wire it up so when the ac is on low speed is full (as far as i can picture easily done with a DPDT relay). dodge i know but when the ac is on its usually on full anyway.
as always many thanks

hi chaps.
i did a bit of poking around with the multi metre and found the reason the ac wasnt working accept for on first speed was because first speed is burnt out and when in any other speed the voltage drop is so sever on the ac supply wire that the relay cant function. so i made a jumper directly off the fan motor wire its self with a diode and 1 amp fuse for protection and wired that to the switch so now it works correctly. i am unsure whats causing the voltage drop on that wire and dont want to pull the whole dash apart in search of it so thats the fix for now.
might replace the fan resistor assembly and see if that fixes it in the future.
thanks
