View Full Version : Sunlight Sensor - WTF?

The TJ/KJ configuration diagrams show a "Sunlight Senor" (C-01) at the top of the dashboard.

What is this for?

I can't find it in the circuit diagrams. Can anyone tell me where it is in those?

While looking into getting a KJ, I read a review that complained about how easy it was to drive at night with the headlights off. Anyone used to a brightly illuminated instrument display only appearing with the headlights on could make that mistake.

I've even flashed another driver to let him know his lights were off, while I was unknowingly doing the same thing!

Anyway, I would have thought that this sunlight sensor thingy would be used to sound an alarm to indicate "You're driving, your lights are off, and it's nighttime". But no, so what is it for?

Also, how does the search system work for multiple keys?
If I want to lookup "sunlight sensor" or "seat belt" without getting a billion hits on other sensors or timing belts, how do I do that? I've tried "seat belt", seat and belt, +seat +belt, but still get posts with either word. Can't see a help system for it either...

Ok,

The sunlight sensor sits above the middle dash just where the windscreen hits the dash there will be a small square in the centre. It is wired to the climate control as its part of that system.

Verada High Contrast instruments are an issue for people forgetting to turn lights on. However there are a couple of solutions. The first, is if you have the early high contrast meters, a bulb can be added to the back of it so a light comes on when the headlights are on. SEE HERE (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?p=849208#post849208)

The second option is to install one of the JDM headlight stalks with 'Auto' position and then add an aftermarket automatic headlight module.

This only works for high contrast dash clusters from KH, KJ1 and maybe KJ1.5. From KJ2 onwards, they have changed the dash clusters to use LEDs and reduced the thickness of the dash cluster as well. KL and KW have a slightly different high contrast dash cluster from the KJ2.

This second option works for everyone! :)

in our Delica , the "Solar Radiation Sensor" is used for the climate control and the auto headlights as described above , controlled by the ETACs module.

Thanks for your replies.

I knew where the sensor was physically, I just didn't know what it was for, or what it connected to. Especially as it didn't fit my guess as to its purpose (headlight reminder).
Ok, so knowing now that it's to do with the AirCon, I see it on p76 of 54cp3.pdf.

Why would that system need to know about sunlight? (temperature yes, but light?) Covering over the sensor doesn't seem to have any effect (not immediate anyway)...

Forgetting to turn on the headlights was just when I first got the car - I think I'm over it now, so I'm not seeking a solution anymore. But when I get into interfacing with the body electronics via ODBC, I will include the reminder function, possibly with auto headlight switching.
