My power steering whines a little in my 2003 TL magna and I noticed the fluid is almost at the low point. On the cap is says only use approved fluid. Is it fine to use something like the Shell stuff? I don't think the Mitsubishi branded stuff has any special additives?

The mitsu stuff is quite cheap, no reason to not use it unless the dealer is a long way away. I've used other stuff without harmful effects. The whine is probably due to air in the system, once topped up it takes a while for all the air to come out of the fluid.

have you made sure that you are checking it with the car running and warm as per instruction manual, as it will be low when off/cold

Yup, sure did, was only just above the low point when warm.

So what fluid did you use?
Just curious because maybe I should do this myself as my TW is groaning on startups although this could be the belt.
Anyone know if it's mandatory for mitsubishi fluid or what the generic equivalent product would be?

I had a bottle of Penrite and a bottle of Shell but ended up using the Penrite as it listed being compatible with the Mitsubishi fluid on the label.
