View Full Version : Is 12.2v too low for the magna to start?

Hi
My trip comptuer reset itself today, I tried to start the car, it tries to crank but no go.
I went to measure the battery and the battery was around 12.2 - 12.4v ! I'm figuring this voltage is fine???

anyways I jumped it with another car and it started fine.
Just wondering if its my battery. I did some water in my battery.

For just sitting there that's fine, but what did it drop to whilst you were cranking the starter?

The voltage often makes bugger all difference, if it wont' start and you didn't run it flat in some way then you likely need a new one.

Bad batteries can manifest like random not starting, slow starting, etc - even with OK voltages.

As above, you need to watch the reaction from the battery when a draw is applied to it. If it is old/in poor condition, chances are it is dropping to around 10V or less when you crank the car. If it is an open cell battery, you could probably revive it and get another year or 2 out of it by giving it a dose of Inox battery conditioner and putting it on a changer overnight :)

As I said, dont bother with a new batt if you can pull a few more years of life out of the current one with Inox! $10 vs $120

Go to an auto electricians and get the battery load tested mate.

However dont rely on those load tests 100%, I have quite a few times seen batteries that pass these load tests but are still cactus and cause random starting issues.
